"The night four terrified little girls crawled beneath my table and begged me to pretend I was their father, I thought it was just another strangerâs problem passing through my world. They had no idea the man they chose for protection was the same man feared by everyone in Chicagoâs criminal underworld.
The first little girl appeared beneath my table so quietly that I thought I had imagined her.
Then a second pair of frightened eyes appeared beside hers.
Then a third.
Then a fourth.
My hand stopped halfway to my teacup as I stared down at the four girls hiding beneath the small café table. They wore matching navy coats, identical cream-colored ribbons, and expressions that revealed more than words ever could.
One looked terrified.
One looked angry.
One looked like she was seconds away from crying.
And the smallest one had both hands wrapped tightly around my pant leg.
âPlease,â she whispered.
Most people in Chicago knew my name. Alexander Hayes was not a man people approached without a reason. I was the head of a powerful criminal organization, a man who controlled businesses, territory, and information from behind closed doors.
Fear was something I understood.
But fear in a childâs eyes was something different.
âAre you girls lost?â I asked.
Four heads shook at once.
The smallest girl looked toward the entrance of the café and held onto me tighter.
âOur mom is over there.â
I followed her gaze.
Near the doorway stood a woman in a charcoal-gray suit speaking with two men. She looked composed, elegant, and powerful, but her eyes told a different story.
She was searching.
Searching for them.
The woman had dark auburn hair pulled into a neat knot, and the two men beside her carried themselves like they were used to getting what they wanted.
I looked back at the girls.
âYou need to go to your mother.â
âNo.â
The answer came from all four of them.
I frowned slightly.
Then the smallest girl whispered the words that made the entire café disappear around me.
âPretend youâre our father.â
For several seconds, I said nothing.
I had spent years watching people lie, manipulate, and betray each other for power. I had built my empire by understanding human weakness.
But these four children were not trying to gain anything.
They were trying to escape something.
âWhy?â I asked.
One of the girls swallowed.
âBecause Mr. Mercer says we need one.â
Another shook her head.
âBut we donât want him.â
My eyes moved toward the man near the entrance.
âWho is Mr. Mercer?â
The angriest-looking girl pointed.
âHim.â
My jaw tightened.
âWhat did he do?â
âHe told Mommy she was difficult,â one girl said.
âHe said nobody trusts women who cannot keep a husband,â another whispered.
âHe said our family looks broken.â
Then the smallest girl looked up at me.
âAnd he said he could fix us.â
Those words changed something.
âDid he hurt you?â
The girls shook their heads.
âDid he threaten you?â
A silence followed.
Then one girl quietly said, âHe told Mommy she would marry him eventually. He said we should get used to calling him Dad.â
My fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
I knew threats.
I knew intimidation.
I knew exactly what kind of man used fear to control others.
At home, my own son, Ethan, was the only person who saw the man behind my reputation. After losing his mother years earlier, he had been the reason I remembered there was still something worth protecting beyond power and money.
Looking at those four girls, I saw the same fear I had once seen in my own childâs eyes.
Children did not understand influence or reputation.
They understood who made them feel safe.
And somehow, they had chosen me.
I slowly set my teacup down.
âOkay.â
The four girls looked up.
âOkay what?â the smallest one asked.
I looked toward the man standing near their mother, then back at the children hiding beneath my table.
For the first time in a long time, someone had asked me for something that had nothing to do with my empire.
âOkay,â I said quietly. âIâll be your father.â
