There's a new episode of the Tales of a Gearhead podcast out now on all platforms! Stacey is on the road in this episode, traveling all the way out to DuBois, Wyoming to sit down with Dan Starks, the founder of the National Museum of Military Vehicles. The museum is a massive 160,000 sq/ft facility that houses over 500 military vehicles, weapons, and other artifacts used in this nation’s conflicts going all the way back to the Revolutionary War up to Iraq and Afghanistan. Stacey and Dan discuss Dan’s passion for celebrating the veterans and their sacrifices for the country, Dan investing over ONE HUNDRED MILLION dollars of his own money to bring the museum to life, and his veterans outreach programs like The Wilderness Healing Project.

I always like to give updates on projects when we can, and a lot of you guys have been asking about the ‘40 Chevy Hot Rod coupe we rolled in a while back. It’s been at the Hot Rod Institute for a while, being worked on by the students and the instructors, and we’ve got some great updates for you!
1. As you can see, the louvers are grafted into the hood, giving the car the distinct hot rod look I was after. They may be a pain to paint and keep clean, but nothing looks better than louvers on the hood of a hot rod!
2. On the front of the car, the nose has been smoothed and the front fenders worked, and the lower pan smoothed and welded in.
3. At the rear, the roll pan is installed and metal worked, and the license plate has been frenched into the trunk lid for a subtle custom touch.
4. The gas filler neck has been relocated to the rear deck, with a special fl**ge being built for the filler cap to bolt to.
5. The only things left to do are modifying and working the lower fenders and laying out the exhaust system.
In case you are new to this project or GEARZ, the reason I like partnering with Doug and Danny Larue at the Hot Rod Institute on high visibility projects is it allows the students to get some hands-on experience on a high-level build. This is important because the HRI is one of the premier schools in the nation for teaching young gearheads the fabrication and building skills that will be required to work at a top tier hot rod shop or open their own. It’s important to invest in these students because they are the ones that will be building cool stuff for the next generation! If you’re interested in the Hot Rod Institute, check ‘em out!

This Memorial Day, take a moment to remember and honor those who gave their lives for us and our freedoms. This picture shows the Mickey Harris artwork on Sgt. Rock's tailgate. Seeing this outside my office every day is a strong reminder of their sacrifice.

Gearz Reel Rewind! Be careful picking up the giant tires for your off-road project, and think twice before throwing out the stock ones! This video might just be foreshadowing something coming up soon...

Gearz Reel Rewind! This is an older clip, but the tip still holds true. Clean up brackets and other small parts to make your project look a lot better when you're done.

This week's What are you workin' on? comes from Jose in Sun Valley, CA and is brought to you by our friends at Woodward Fab!
Jose says, "My dad had a B5 blue 1969 Charger when he was in his 20s. He sold the car to get a family vehicle, and I’ve been wanting to get one so he can cruise around like he did in his early days. I found one with the same B5 blue, blue interior, and a big block 383 4-barrel just like he had so I bought it. The bad part was it needed rust repair on the right rear corner from the rear window to the trunk and quarter panel. What was just a simple get it running project turned into a full restoration. The car is currently torn down and welding has begun. I have all the new sheet metal already and I’m doing all the work myself. I’m not a professional by any means, just a guy with a vision and a dream. Wish me luck."

This Week in Gearhead History: on May 19th, 1957, Juan Manuel Fangio won the Monaco Grand Prix in a Maserati! He started on the pole, but Stirling Moss was in the lead by the end of the first lap. After a major crash on lap 4 took out several of the top competitors, Fangio reclaimed the lead and held it until the end. It was his second victory of the 1957 season, which was his 5th and final Formula One championship.

Are you having clearance issues with your old truck’s steering box? Before you get the angle grinder out, check the cab mounts! The old wooden mounts on the Power Wagon were worn out and let the cab shift quite a bit. See this fix and more later this season on !

This week's What are you workin' on? comes from Danny in Winder, GA!
Danny says, "I paid $1400 for this 1998 Dodge 1500 Laramie in 2009 with 160k miles on it as an everyday driver for my lawn maintenance business. It now has 248k on it with a nice rear main seal leak from the trusty 318 Magnum engine. It sits in my shop now for trips to the dump or Home Depot. With the never-ending honey-do list, four grandkids and another on the way, my restoration plans keep getting pushed back. So far, I have replaced and/or rebuilt everything on the suspension by myself in my home shop. This included new front brake lines, shocks, drilled and slotted rotors, calipers, bearings, axle seals, steering components, a manual 4WD actuator replacing the unreliable vacuum system, and all the body work. I have new tow mirrors, LED headlights, taillights, rear bumper, seat foam and covers, catalytic converters and O2 sensors, and A/C system with lines and compressor sitting in boxes waiting for time to install them. I even got a conversion kit to fit a 2017 4th gen 2500 bumper on my 2nd gen. Oh, and did I mention this was a factory 5-speed truck? Inside I have new carpet, headliner, and a dash also waiting for the time to install them. My next big project to tackle will be the rear main seal replacement as well as new water pump, oil pump, injectors, and some fresh Mopar orange paint after sealing up the entire engine with a new gasket kit and sensors. I'm 58 years old and still love turning wrenches on my projects and watching Gearz!"
