Despite their name, nine-banded armadillos don't always have exactly nine bands on their armor. They typically have between 7 and 11 bands, but the average is close to nine, hence the name.

Male moose are called bulls while females are cows. When a calf (a young moose) is born, it will stay with its mother for a bit under one year. Once the mom becomes pregnant again, she will chase her calf off.

At first glance, you probably wouldn’t guess that this bird played a major part in an ancient religion. The African sacred ibis was associated with the Egyptian deity Thoth, and was considered his earthly incarnation. Today, this ibis hangs out in wetlands and forages for small fish, insects, and reptiles.

Isn’t this guy happy? It’s a quokka, a marsupial found primarily on Rottnest Island off the coast of Australia. Unfortunately, they’re not actually “smiling” the way humans know. Instead, the quokka’s facial structure causes it to mimic a human smile. Still, this hasn’t diminished their popularity with tourists.

This is a yellow-eyed penguin. As you’d expect from the name, it does have yellow eyes, as well as a distinctive crest. It’s found only on the southern tip of New Zealand and islands belonging to New Zealand, such as Auckland Island and Stewart Island.

Fiddler crabs are a small species of crab known for their mismatched claws. Found only in males, the major claw is large because a larger claw is better at attracting females. Male fiddler crabs will “wave” at females to attract them to their burrows.

No matter if they’re black, brown, or white, all bear cubs are born in litters averaging 2-3. Cubs stay with their mothers for a year and a half before staking out to claim their own territory (or getting kicked out by mom).

This is a muskellunge, more commonly known as a musky. This large freshwater fish rules the lakes and large rivers where they’re found. Adults are large and ferocious enough that their only natural predators are bald eagles and other large birds of prey, though pike and bass can eat juveniles.
