50 years ago on October 11, 1975 Saturday Night Live premiered on NBC. The first season starred Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, George Coe, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, Michael O’Donoghue and Gilda Radner. Comedian George Carlin was the host for the first show, with musical guests Billy Preston and Janis Ian. The show was originally called “NBC’s Saturday Night Live” because ABC was airing a program called “Saturday Night with Howard Cosell”. The first season also included appearances by Andy Kaufman and a recurring Muppet segment “The Land of Gorch”. The series’ 51st season is currently airing on NBC.
