Day 2
WHO IS A BIOTECHNOLOGIST?
A biotechnologist is a person grounded in the knowledge of genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, chemistry, statistics, data management, etc. The list is much longer, but these are some of the major ones.
He is a person who has been trained for 4 years to have vast knowledge and a wide understanding of the most complex species I.e humans, microbes, and plants.
"Why do biotechnologists require all this knowledge?"
The work of a biotechnologist is simple, he modifies organisms, microbes, and crops to get desirable outcomes.
Which happens to come with a lot of complexity. What complexity? You may ask.
Have you ever heard of the word "GMO"? Does it ring a bell? It stands for "Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)", which are majorly produced to meet the fast-growing needs of a society or nation.
HOW DOES THIS WORK?
Just like explained in my first post on "WHAT'S BIOTECHNOLOGY" mating of animals, e.g., a sheep which usually gives birth to a single offspring, with a ram which has the gene of birthing triplets in order to boost yield in which the sheep could reproduce triplets due to the mating. This is one of the aims of biotechnology using natural methods.
But chances are excellent that sometimes the goat might still give birth to a single offspring. Then scientists thought: "Okay, what if the gene for triplets is transferred into the goat permanently?" Meaning from now henceforth, she will be birthing triplets always instead of a single offspring and that, is MODERN BIOTECHNOLOGY.
Continuation in comments....
Tomorrow we will be looking at the APPLICATION OF BIOTECHNOLOGY.
