"Grooming the Future" by Joseph Pearson
40 x 48 inches, oil on gallery-wrapped canvas (2012)

"I am an artist/activist. For more than 45 years the primary focus of my work has been directed toward addressing social/political issues of the day. Our current social/political climate offers much to fuel my creative efforts in this regard. It seems in some regards, the more things change, the more they remain the same. These pieces, The plea and Miscarriage of justice are just as relevant today as when I first painted them many years ago!

The saying is, it takes a village to raise a child, Grooming the future speaks to the importance of older generations “grooming” i.e. preparing our young people to meet the challenges of life.

This includes the protection and nurture of family, community and grandma’s hands.

These have always been a source of strength and security in our culture." -Joseph Pearson

"Lemonade" by April Harrison
30 x 40 inches, mixed media on gallery wrapped canvas

South Carolina native April W Harrison creates rich mixed-media paintings that reveal her unshakeable belief in the strength of faith, family and friendship. Her adept use of color and collaging with speciality paper and magazine prints, as well as her audacious re-purposing of found objects in her work, add a physical reality and a quilt-like quality that roots it firmly within an African American artistic tradition.

Fathers and Father Figures Friday

Fathers and Father Figures Friday:

Join us for a conversation with noted artists Jim Alexander, Jamaal Barber and Kevin Williams for a conversation about the role of fathers and father figures in cultivating the artistic talents and freedom of self expression for our children. This conversation will be moderated by Romal Tune, acclaimed author of "I Wish My Dad: The Power of Vulnerable Conversations between Fathers and Sons."

Jim Alexander is recipient of a myriad awards for his Documentary Photograpy. He is identified as a “participant observer”, recognizing the undeniable influence of his mere presence, but pleading allegiance to the role of the spectator. Since acquiring his first camera in 1952, his personal experiences and consumption of Black scholarship and thought has increasingly informed his camera.

Jamaal Barber is an artist, printmaker, and educator from Virginia. Jamaal’s art has been featured on Twitter, the New York Times, Penguin Random House, Black Art in America, and Emory University. Barber is presently a visiting lecturer at the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design in Atlanta, GA.

Kevin A. Williams better known by the art moniker WAK, his initials backwards, is an American painter and businessman from Chicago’s Southside. He is one of the most celebrated figurative storytellers of this era. His 50 urban art prints are the most widely circulated African American art prints in the world.

Romal Tune, is a highly sought after international speaker, author, and social impact entrepreneur. He serves as a Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at TMS Global and is the founder of ClereStory Education, a nonprofit that offers workshops and coaching about mental health. Tune is a graduate of Howard University and Duke University School of Divinity. He speaks internationally at conferences addressing topics of inner healing, thriving, and the importance of mental health. He is the author of God’s Graffiti, Love Is an Inside Job and I Wish My Dad.

“I Wish My Dad uses powerful stories that give men the expressive insight we need to be vulnerable. It highlights the importance of naming emotional needs as a man and showing affection as a father.“

Joy Ride by Cedric Smith
30 x 40 inches acrylic painting on gallery wrap canvas

Smith is a self-taught artist who while eschewing the “so-called rules of art”, has created a personal genre of work. He draws on a wide range of influences and sources, both traditional and contemporary, and which include landscape art, pop art, brand advertising and photography to express his poignant observations of life in the rural south. A prolific artist, Smith works with a honed discipline on his compositions, seamlessly morphing photographic images into his richly textured pieces, applying and removing layers and lettering.

"Quetzacoatl" by Israel Soloman
40 x 30 inches, acrylic on canvas

Israel Solomon is a visual artist with a studio practice based primarily in Indianapolis, Indiana. Soloman has a passion for creating art, and expressing himself visually through paint. As an artist, his work is very figurative and based in abstraction. He uses vibrant colors and rhythmic geometric patterns to create his compositions, and often draws on personal experiences with my family, friends, acquaintances, and experiences. Visual art has been a primary means of expression for him throughout his life, as he began drawing as a child. As someone who has not always been very vocal, he often found it easier to express his feelings and thought process through a creative visual process. It is important for him to create works that are personal to his own experiences, in hopes that others can connect with the energy that the work produces.

"Way of the Gods" by Carla Harris
30 x 40 inches, photography and digital painting on paper

Born in Indianapolis, IN, but raised traveling the globe as the child of a military officer, Carla Jay Harris’s social and artistic development was impacted tremendously by the geopolitical and natural environments she encountered. She fervently believes that space (physical and physiological) has a fundamental, lasting impact on personal identity. While the environment around us is constantly evolving, photography has the power to capture humanity in a place, in a moment - transforming a flicker in time into a lasting, appreciable statement. Carla's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in New York, Los Angeles, DC, Paris, and Quebec. She completed undergraduate coursework at the School of Visual Arts in New York, received her bachelor's degree with distinction from the University of Virginia, and her MFA from UCLA in 2015. She currently lives/works in Los Angeles, CA. Her works are included in the collections of USC Fisher Museum, Los Angeles, CA; California African American Museum, Los Angeles, CA; Museum of Art and History, Lancaster, CA; The Museum of Fine Arts, Sherbrook, Quebec, Canada; General Mills' corporate collection, Minneapolis, MN; USC's Fisher Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; and numerous private collections.

"From Songhai to Symphony Hall" by Marcella Hayes Muhammad
30 x 40 inches, oil painting on canvas

Marcella Hayes Muhammad, whose career in fine art stretches from the 1960’s to current times, is always testing the bounds of her talents. She is constantly exploring the medium of oils allowing her experiences and research to guide her work. She is known for her attention to detail and vibrant colors. Marcella has developed a technique of using a unique blending of multi dominant elements and rhythmic colors harmonized in as many as four or more colors in action at a time. After many years developing her expertise in realism, Marcella developed a style of abstraction inspired by the cubist style of Pablo Picasso, who in turn was inspired by Georges Braque and painted in a style later described by a critic as being made of "little cubes" thus leading to the term cubism. Marcella paints in her unique style described by a critic as a flow of forms using light and color leading to the term "Plasticism" or Plastic Space. Her main inspirations developed at a young age through her exposure to galleries and art museums around the world as a military dependent.

I want to recommend Dr Manley to you all I will never stop thanking him for changing my love story, my husband left me in United Of America for another woman in United Kingdom over 3 years I was devastated and I couldn't move on so I was eager to get him back I tried all possible means to get him back but all to no avail until I came across a testimony on social media on how Dr Manley has been helping people in getting their ex lover back and healing different deadly diseases I contacted him and he told me and explain to him my problem and he told me what to do and I did. In three days my husband called and ask me for my location of my new address, I sent it and I was surprise to see my husband again kneeling and apologising to me, after 3 years of waiting, now I can proudly say my husband we are happy to be together and he is now more lovely and kind to me. You can also contact Dr. Manley on his email: [email protected] or WhatsApp +905428528628.
