2019In 1979, a family searching for arrowheads in Buffalo Cave, Idaho, stumbled upon a mummified human torso, partially preserved and strangely positioned within the cave. Forensic experts were baffled, as the remains appeared both ancient and relatively recent. Despite careful examination, the identity of the individual remained unknown, and the mystery lingered for decades.
By 1991, the torso had attracted attention from researchers worldwide, but no conclusive identification had been made. It wasn’t until 2019 that advanced DNA analysis provided a breakthrough. A bone fragment from the leg matched the previously recovered torso and limbs, revealing that the remains belonged to Joseph Henry Loveless, a notorious criminal who had escaped prison in 1916 and was presumed murdered shortly afterward. Remarkably, the clothing found with the remains corresponded exactly to descriptions from the wanted posters issued the day he vanished.
Loveless’s case is now recognized as the oldest identified murder victim in U.S. history, highlighting how some crimes can remain unsolved for decades.
