to answer some questions

https://soundcloud.com/agueybanax/sets/soul-initiated-hip-hop-2000

I got some questions coming in about why I exactly stepped away from the local scene in 2003, but to put it in context. We had few guys from Lehigh University who helped manage, promote and book us.

So when I got back on my grind, we recorded this album but they had already worked out some arrangements with Rap a Lot Records (Scarface/Getoboyz) and Master P (No Limit Records) It was a matter of who we ended up with.

Basically, they were wanting me to change my whole vibe, use more foul language, act gangster, and do some kind of cowboy - western imagery to market the whole package. They even had music produced and lyrics written for me to "take it and make it my own"

I essence, I felt like they wanted me to be a clown for the sake of "making it" and when Marv and I refused, they told me I would never make it. I agreed and went on with my life until 2014...

So basically if you listen to what we did, and you can only imagine the crazy sh*t we were being asked to do, you can understand why I walked away.

Real Talk

WAR AND GENOCIDE AGAINST PUERTO RICANS
Genocide is intentional action to destroy a people (usually defined as an ethnic, national, racial, or religious group) in whole or in part. We were made Citizens in 1917 so that 20,000 Puerto Ricans can be drafted to WW I. Puerto Ricans have been in every War for over 100 years . WWII , 65,000 Puerto Ricans, Korean War Borinqueneers, etc.... Now the World can see this slow action by the USA to help Puerto Rico as Our People Are Dying. THIS IS CALLED GENOCIDE!

My rant for the day:
First my credentials, I was born into this sh*t, 1971 South Bronx, so I have the honor of growing up with Hip Hop all around me, even if I was too young to understand what it was and how much of an impact it would make in my life. And yes I see where it is today.

I am a lyricist and specialize in abstract flows, I have an album coming out in the next couple months which is pretty much a class on lyricism. My subject matter tends to be a little more serious than the typical party climate of hip hop, because I tend to write cathartic.

I will admit I used to have the mentality of f**k this new sh*t, but some discussions with my master kind of opened my eyes to a wide range of possibilities, plus the experience of working with younger talent and trying to understand their perspective in the world.

my question is, How can we ask for respect from this new generation if we are so unwilling to give it ourselves? SO I try to keep an open mind about artists like Lil Yachty, because although I may not consider him on par with any of my heroes, Rakim, KRS ne or Big Daddy Kane, I am willing to believe that with the right direction a dude like that can be a force in hip hop.

Lets not get it twisted, In my heyday, late 80s early 90s, I would chew up a guy like Lil Yachty for target practice. It was a different world back then and people paid more attention to what you said and how you said it. People still do, but usually an older or more mature mind

Even Big Daddy Kane said in an interview, big words are not impressive, you can rhyme things like "superfluous" and "nothing to it", and its dope and all, but here comes Busy Bee rapping about Blue jeans and completely captivate the audience. See that is what it is to be an MC...

Guaranteed Lil Yachty would look silly trying to rock my crowd with what he do, but also guaranteed that my complicated wordplay will go over the heads of his audience. So that makes me or Him more or less of an MC?

Here's another fact, While his simplicity works just fine for what he is trying to do, his audience will eventually mature, and so will he. When that time comes, he will have to evolve as an artist, and when he do, you think he trying to hear what we have to say if we been hating on his potential the whole time?

I love the old school, i'm grounded in it, but that doesnt mean I cant move into the future. I probably wont ever vibe to a trap beat because its simply not my thing, but if thats what the kids like, who am I to say he not an MC. He giving his people what they want, eventually they will want more, and that is when a lyricist like me starts to shine.

I'm not gonna hate on this cat, because unlike some other rap artists, he does come across as genuine. He has a lot to learn, and I want to be the kind of dude that is willing to teach him, but also respect that his business game is strong and he has a lot to teach us too.

Kodak Black is a different story, kid is just disrespectful, but we came across that back in the day too. Hell, I was pretty arrogant back in the day, so I chalk that up to being young.

But the concluding point, is instead of hating on these younger cats, lets try and guide them, encourage them to grow as artists. I have enough confidence in myself as artist to say, that you give me a solid 8 hours with Lil Yachty, and if he is willing to learn, I promise you we can grind out a backpack classic. It may not be his thing, but I think the kid has the talent. I've seen enough out of him to come to that conclusion, and I trust my judgement in this matter

Peace and Love
