The Eden Prairie boys' hockey program put down their sticks to support local families in a heartwarming effort for PROP - People Reaching Out to People

JV and varsity players, alongside Bantam AA teams, gathered 710 pounds of donations—including cake mix, frosting, and candles—to launch a "birthday-bag" drive. Days later, they were inside the PROP Food Shelf, assembling those donations into 184 complete birthday bags for neighbors in need.

This work provided the athletes with a close-up look at how PROP offers holistic support (from food to financial help) to Eden Prairie and Chanhassen residents. Captains and players alike left with a clear understanding of how a simple act of service can ensure local kids don't go without a celebration.

With Eden Prairie home to a large Somali community, parents urged the district to provide specific, public-facing safety plans rather than general assurances, particularly following inflammatory national rhetoric and reported ICE activity in the area.
District leaders, including Superintendent Josh Swanson, acknowledged the "very real" fear and confirmed they are actively reviewing and strengthening safety procedures. Swanson affirmed the district's commitment: "As long as kids are in our care, we will do everything we can to provide a safe and welcoming environment."
Read more on the ongoing dialogue between the school board and residents.

Community members say Eden Prairie Schools’ message about rising ICE activity was too “vague,” prompting calls for clearer safety plans.
