Dolphins’ “Smile” Reveals Playful Intentions

New research shows that bottlenose dolphins use an open-mouth facial expression, resembling a “smile,” to communicate playfulness during social interactions.

Dolphins display this expression when they are in their playmate’s view, signaling that the interaction is playful rather than aggressive.

When one dolphin “smiles,” their playmate mimics the expression 33% of the time, reinforcing their connection.
