I love music.

Before I became disabled I worked in live sound and was fortunate enough to work with AZ bands record demos out of Bob Hoags Flying Blanket Recording Studios in Mesa AZ. Billy Jee, Dale Goodman and Chris Warmuth of The Necronauts were gracious enough to give me the opportunity to assist in the record/mix of their dual album Gauche et Droite.
Here's one of the songs!

For all the creatives out there, do you do your art/writing/production in silence? With music(what kind?), TV on or any other way and does it influence your work?

I listen to music and let the vibes take me. During intense violent scenes I play grindcore/death metal(shocker Lol) like Pig Destroyer, Amon Amarth. Chaotic and surreal The Dillinger Escape Plan/Primus and the gaps inbetween Ska/Punk Good Riddance/The Vandals. But that is not all, rap and indie tracks help break up but not de-rail the tone of the story.

Fact about me for the newly added, in high school I picked up the bass guitar. I tried to join garage bands, but nothing stuck. At 18 I met Marcus McClellan when I started working at Big 8 groceries and through him formed hardcore band called One Left Standing. Before we played any shows as OLS, we performed as a Misfits cover band called "Night of the living dead boys". Our first show was a backyard shindig and then holloween weekend at a bar called Wild Hares.

Over the next 10 years I'd play in various other bands like Out For Revenge, Ozmirella(we played 1 show) and in what was supposed to be a riot girl band TV TRASH K*LL.

Good times and lots of love for the AZPunk scene!

A question to the indie creators!

I went through my email from kickstarter, specifically from Dumb Reminders campaign and I noticed that half the messages were crowdfunding marketers pitching me to hire them in order to get more attention and paying backers. I didn't hire them, because I had hired a marketing team for The Reckoning #1 and the juice wasn't worth the squeeze. I definitely learned a hard and expensive lesson. Money walks, but can't talk authentically.

So, how do you engage with an algorithm to talk about your art and yourself without being outrageous or bombastic to real people?

Cards on the table, for those who don't know me I have a LONG history of being extremely quiet and reserved. Unless I get a few turkey and gravey shots...or sake then ugh I'll not shut up about why dogs are awesome, Gremlins lore and golden age comics.

I also never liked being a sales man and I am always self concious that I have to sell myself and my books. It feels off to me.

Which brings me to the other email messages I got. I was asked about stretch goal rewards and extra add ons. I didn't have any, not for Dumb Reminders. No tokens, trading cards or prints. I didn't think it was in good taste, considering that Dumb Reminders is about disability, the emotional/physical/social and psychological weight that I and others carry shouldn't be commoditized and sold as a throw away Tchotchke. Did I do myself a disservice by not commissioning stuff to sell for the sake of selling?

I don't know, so I ask you who have experience and wisdom. Your thoughts?

Howdy!
Its been a minute since I have given an update on what has been going on over here.
Dumb Reminders did not reach its funding goal on kickstarter, not even close. That was a heart wrenching gut punch to say the least. Dumb Reminders is a story I am compelled to tell and share with the world(or the sentimental types who pick it up). That being said, its production will continue, just slower than I hoped.

The self funding/publishing aspects of comic creation has been fun and...frustrating.

I get it through, I'm a new creator/writer. So I am untested/proven, unknown and broke. A unhappy combination of invisibility in a sea of creatives, brands and influencers who currently have the means and "sauce" to make waves. In this increasingly tough economic and cultural maelstrom of a world I understand why something simply is.

With tight wallets, why spend $10 on my first book The Reckoning #1(written by an unknown) when you could buy Ultimate Spiderman by Jonathan Hickman or TMNT by Jason Aaron and reasonably know it's going to be decent read/art at the least. So little buyers remorse. BTW this isn't a diss on the pros or any one on the way up, just a observation.

I will concede that some frustration(jelousy? envy?) comes from personal circumstances. Being poor on a fixed income of S.S. and spousal support, chronic disability by way of paralysis and VERY limited family support makes endeavors extremely difficult. Being shut off or slowed from creating art due to physical/economic paywalls is disheartening.

Do mot mistake this for a need of pity or declaration of victimhood. I am known for being persistent, dogged and plain stubborn to give up. I told myself I was going to work in live sound/music production and I did. I boxed in the amateurs(including the AZ Golden Gloves) broke my hand, ribs and nose without quitting and I created The Reckoning #1. All these things I did when everyone I talked to responded with a dismissive "cool story bro".

So, the work continues because I do too.
