On this day, 75 years ago, WEPS went on air for the first time with around four hours of programming. This live broadcast included music, a student assembly, discussions with administrators regarding the importance of having an educational radio station, and 2 basketball games.

U-46 was the first public school system in the State of Illinois to have their own FM radio station. Orrin G. Thompson, Superintendent of Schools at the time, noted "The progressive spirit of the Elgin community is reflected in the establishment of our FM radio station to be used exclusively by the Elgin Public Schools as an integral part of its modern educational program."

WEPS was initially dedicated to the following uses:
1. Broadcast instructional programs to the seventeen schools in the Elgin system,
2. Provide students experiences in the organization and production of radio programs,
3. Help students develop attitudes of critical listening to radios in an era of mass communication,
4. Give realistic motivation to classroom activities,
5. Rebroadcast worthwhile programs from outside sources,
6. Broadcast special events of interest to the community at large,
7. Disseminate information pertaining to the operation of the schools.

75 years later, students are still involved in the production of radio programs for WEPS through clubs, learning important skills in communication, public speaking, and technology.

🎵 This , we're spinning on back to 1974. The primary way students broadcasted pre-recorded music over the air was with vinyl records. Our studio had multiple turntables so the next song could be cued up while another was playing. Records work by converting vibrations from tiny grooves on the discs into electrical signals. While it might seem old-school compared to streaming, many people still love vinyl for its warm sound and the physical connection to the music.
