Our Story
Gearhead® Productions, Inc. is a California S Corporation, owned and operated by Rev. Michelle Haunold and guided by a board of directors. Overseeing the entire Gearhead® brand, the company manages the federally registered trademarks, copyrights, and licensing for all the Gearhead® products including a clothing line, a record label, a magazine, digital content and other printed matter. The Gearhead flags logo is recognized internationally as a calling card to all DIYers-- it’s the place to go if you dig underground rock and roll and the ingenuity of American car culture!
Gearhead® started as a magazine in 1993, the brainchild of former owner Mike LaVella. The magazine was inspired by the DIY culture around hot rods, custom cars and rock n’ roll. It was an immediate success and the worldwide demand led to the creation of the clothing line shortly after the launch of the magazine.
In 2000, the brand expanded to include the record label when Rev. Michelle joined forces. Having met when both were writers for the critically acclaimed punk magazine Maximum Rock ‘n’ Roll, the two worked together to release over sixty records as well as a expand the line of clothing and accessories and the continuation of the magazine. Internationally recognized, the distinct logo and products associated with the brand have been sold to over 50 counties.
Gearhead® products and music have been featured in major motion pictures, national radio shows, TV shows, advertisements and national magazines, including multiple MTV productions, West Coast Chopper motorcycle events, Rockstar and Sega video games, ads from Airwalk, Vans and Roxy and magazines including Rolling Stone, Spin, Newsweek, Women’s Wear Daily and Alternative Press.
The Gearhead® brand continues to grow change and expand, pulling design elements and inspiration from the past but barreling down the road towards the future.

Happy Birthday to the original influencer, Rodney Bingenheimer (aka Rodney on the Rock). Pictures here with his rock n roll 1967 GTO. If it wasn’t for Rodney, none of us would know if David Bowie, Blondie, The Ramones, Joan Jett and dozens of other then unknown artists. We here at Gearhead had the privilege of working with Rodney on several projects, including a behind the scenes look at all the bands whose butts have been in his famous car (read the interview in issue 20) and a Christmas record, Santa’s Got a GTO vol. 2 (Ltd Ed press of 500 on red vinyl). So next time you sing along to the Ramones, the Go-Gos, Joan Jett or other bands, you can thank this fellow for discovering them and making them part of our musical world. Wishing you another year of rock n roll and the happiest of birthdays Rodney! To celebrate head over to Gearheadhq.com now until Dec. 2020 and enter code RodneyRocks to get 20% off at checkout on all items in the Gearhead store!
Gearhead shines the light in that murky underground space where hot rods and punk rock collide. Like a fiery mass burning bright, the allure of being part of a culture only a very few are allowed into is intoxicating. The common thread is those individuals who are always pushing the boundaries, looking for something different, something unique that the masses have no inkling of. Climb in, belt up and get ready for the ride. It is in pursuing what others can’t even dream of that we truly experience the thrill of a creative life.
Sexy as hell —Thanks ! #32
Hey ho daddy-o! Norm Grabowski’s original roadster hotrod as seen in the epic 1957 Life Magazine article that introduced the world to this underground phenomenon. Dig it baby!

Way to rock it girls!
It was one year ago today that this beautiful talented woman passed away. A day doesn’t go by that we don’t think of you and miss your fun sassy self. So proud to have had you as our Ms GEARHEAD 2016
Raise your glasses to my beautiful mama. It has been one month since she died and I am just shattered. I miss her every day, and am so grateful for the 87 years she graced this earth with her beautiful smile, charm and silliness. She embraced the unusual and the different people that populated this world and she was kind and open to everyone. She taught me the meaning of having a moral compass, of standing up and speaking out for those who had no voice. She was the original DIYer, raised during the depression when you made everything yourself. God forbid you had to go to the store to buy it! If you did she taught me to make sure it was quality and worth every penny you paid for it because that penny equaled blood sweat and tears. I was raised to be kind and generous and to always give others the benefit of the doubt and every single thing she taught me colors the way I run Gearhead. You get quality and value for your money because it was how I was raised. It is a gift and a legacy and I will honor her spirit, her grace and her unique take on life with every order I pack and every product I release. She called me her Wildflower— she got me as few people ever have. I have always marched to the beat of my own drummer. My husband gets me and my mom adored my husband because he too marches to the beat of his own drummer. I would not have stuck with running Gearhead for the last 20 years if it were not for the love and support of these two incredible people. If you have people like this in your life your are rich beyond measure. Make sure to tell them every day how much you love and appreciate them because one day they will be gone. I love you mom, and I will carry on because I have to. I love you Bill, you are my rock. Love always Michelle
Cannot wait for this documentary about punk rock legend Joey Sh****ad from DOA! Just a few days left on their Kickstarter fundraiser!
Named Kookie’s Kar after appearing in “77 Sunset Strip” the legendary ‘31 Ford Model A built by Norm Grabowski went through many iterations before this photo in 2018, courtesy of Mecum Auctions. With its candy-red flames racing across the Rose-pearl body paint, dual super chargers, dual slicks and “Zoomie” exhaust pipes, this t-bucket marvel set the standard for “Live Fast, Be Weird” DIY Kustomizing.
