I stopped in Dégelis expecting a quick break and ended up learning why a guy balancing on a log deserved his own sculpture.

This is a draveur, or log driver. In the early 1930s, men worked the Madawaska River moving timber downstream toward New Brunswick. They actually rode and maneuvered the floating logs, using long poles to keep them moving and break up jams.

Dégelis built Parc de l’Acadie around the importance that water and forests played in the region’s economy, with this sculpture and interpretive panels preserving the story of the men who worked the river.

One of my favorite parts of traveling is stumbling across something I know absolutely nothing about, then walking away knowing a little more. 🤟

Woodstock’s downtown has changed a lot since the days when it was known as Creek Village. What started as one of several settlements along the rivers gradually became the center of business and community life.

It’s another reminder that the places we pass through often have a much longer story than the streets reveal. 🤟

A walk along Souris Beach can turn into a scavenger hunt, especially near low tide. Every weathered piece has spent years being shaped before finally washing back onto shore.

That makes each find a tiny piece of Island history you can actually take home 🤟

I knew Prince Edward Island was famous for its red dirt, but I didn’t realize just how much of the island would actually be red.

The cliffs are red. The rocks are red. The beaches are red. Even the water along the shoreline can take on a reddish tint as the iron-rich soil and sandstone erode into it.

I stopped in Souris and walked out along the beach at low tide. This has been one of my favorite parts of exploring PEI so far. The landscape doesn’t look quite like anywhere else I’ve traveled.

It’s one thing to hear about PEI’s famous red soil. It’s another to spend a few days driving around the island and realize it really is everywhere. 🤟

For centuries, stories of the Burning Ship have been passed around the Northumberland Strait, with sightings reported from both Prince Edward Island and the mainland.

Whether it was an unusual atmospheric phenomenon or something nobody could explain, the mystery became part of Maritime folklore and still survives today. 🤟

Not the coastline. Not the rolling farmland. The island itself.

PEI is famous for its red soil, which gets its color from iron oxidizing in the earth. You see it everywhere once you arrive, from the cliffs and beaches to the dirt along the side of the road.

Then I came across these sculptures in Montague.

Someone took one of the things that makes this island so recognizable and turned it into art.

I love finding stuff like this while traveling because it’s not something I would have known to go looking for. It’s just one of those unexpected discoveries that makes you stop for a minute and appreciate a place in a completely different way.

Sometimes exploring is less about what you came to see and more about what you stumble across along the way. 🤟

There’s something different about arriving on an island by water. The drive becomes part of the experience, and watching the mainland disappear behind you makes the destination feel just a little farther away.

Some roads are shaped by more than pavement and engineering. Along this part of Nova Scotia, the landscape still creates weather that can change the drive in a matter of minutes.

Highway 104 may be newer here, but nature still gets the final say. 🤟

French Lake feels remote even by Cape Breton standards, and that isolation is part of what makes this stretch of the Highlands so striking
