March 20, 2017
Lately we’ve been looking through old photos and really missing traveling. Last year at this time, we had just gotten back from Spain as our trip overseas had gotten cut very short. We were 5 days into a strict 2 week quarantine where we couldn’t even get groceries for ourselves and had to have friends do our shopping for us.

Four years ago today, however, we were walking around the streets of Paris, taking in all the sights for the very first time. That was a short trip too (although intentionally so), but at least for a couple days we got to experience a new city, find places to call our own amongst the winding streets, and see the sights that we had only experienced in pictures and stories before. Can’t wait to get to experience the novelty of travel once again!

One year ago today I was out in the beautiful expanse of my old home state, Utah, exploring its incredible landscape of arches and canyons and meeting an awesome group of people! Hope everyone's doing well and can't wait for another trip like this one!

The night sky, and especially celestial objects have always held a special interest for me. That’s why I was so excited that I got to go out and view Comet NEOWISE as it made its closest approach to Earth yesterday, within 64.3 million miles of our planet.

This 3 mile wide icy comet was discovered by the NEOWISE telescope (Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer) a few months ago on Mar 27, 2020, hence the name. It’s official name is actually Comet C/2020 F3, but NEOWISE was easier to remember. On July 3 it survived it’s closest approach to the Sun and came into view from Earth soon thereafter.

I’ve been out to see the comet three times now, but I think that’s going to be it for me at this point. As the comet now moves steadily away from the Earth (and therefore away from the Sun that’s lighting its tail) it will start to get more and more dim to the point where it will no longer be visible with the naked eye. Although it’s pretty faint now, if you’d like to try to catch a glimpse of this celestial visitor, you can still see it through binoculars in the NW sky just under the Big Dipper about an hour after sunset. For me though, my focus has now shifted to looking forward to the peak of the Perseid meteor shower coming up in about 3 weeks! Happy star hunting!

Happy Graduation Day! Although this definitely isn't the end of the year that any of us expected, we can't wait to welcome you back to campus whenever that may be. Congratulations graduates.

Make sure to stick around for the loop at the end, it’s my favorite part!
While the final video is less than 25 sec long, it’s literally taken me more than six years to get this shot! Granted, I’ve only been trying every once in a while over that period, but still, it’s been quite the process.
They call this kind of day-to-night timelapse, the Holy Grail timelapse because of how difficult it is to keep the exposure smooth across such drastically different lighting conditions. I’ve worked for a while to make this happen, and I’m still learning, still have lots of room to improve, but I’m happy with what I was able to capture this time around! Special thanks to for helping me with the last piece of the puzzle!
