Founded in 1960 by Jerome Goldstein as the journal, Compost Science, BioCycle is the go-to resource on composting, organics recycling, anaerobic digestion and biogas, end product markets, policies and regulations, and community outreach and education. In 2020, we transitioned to digital only through our weekly e-newsletter, BioCycle CONNECT, and our newly relaunched website, BioCycle.net. BioCycle

is recognized worldwide as the Authority on Organics Recycling, dedicated to the advancement of composting and compost utilization, organics recycling, anaerobic digestion and biogas, recycled organics utilization, sustainable infrastructure, and resilient soils and food systems.

In September, the Denver City Council approved updates to the City’s Universal Recycling and Composting Ordinance, put in motion through a community-led “Waste No More” ballot measure that was passed by 70% of Denver voters in November 2022. The ordinance requires that recycling and composting services be provided at multi-family residential buildings, food businesses (covering licensed retail food establishments and licensed commissary, food processing, and wholesale and warehouse establishments), and permitted events.

The number of identified facilities processing in the U.S. has increased steadily since the beginning of the Anaerobic Digestion Data Collection Project, from 154 in 2017 to 313 in 2024 (and 313 is likely an undercount).

The 2024 survey was provided to 313 facilities — 96 stand-alone digesters, 89 on-farm codigestion operations, and 128 codigestion systems at WRRFs.

The Composting Consortium (managed by Closed Loop Partners ’ Center for the Circular Economy) announced the municipal and -led projects that will receive grant funding to enhance infrastructure and the recovery of food-contact packaging. This grant program — in collaboration with the Biodegradable Products Institute and receiving technical support from the US Composting Council — is “designed to fuel systemic change and increase the acceptance of certified compostable packaging across the U.S.”

The eight selected municipal and composter-led projects will receive grants “designed to fuel systemic change and increase the acceptance of certified compostable packaging across the U.S.”
