Founded in 1960 by Jerome Goldstein as the journal, Compost Science, BioCycle is the go-to resource on composting, organics recycling, anaerobic digestion and biogas, end product markets, policies and regulations, and community outreach and education. In 2020, we transitioned to digital only through our weekly e-newsletter, BioCycle CONNECT, and our newly relaunched website, BioCycle.net. BioCycle

According to Sensoneo's Global Waste Index, Israel tops the list of worst performers, followed closely by Chile and the United States — the latter “generating a staggering 951 kg of waste per capita annually.” Notably, the U.S. has increased its per capita waste output since the last edition of the report in 2022 — from 811 kg to 951 kg per capita — “reinforcing its status as the country that generates the most municipal solid waste.”

To understand the full potential for biogases globally, the International Energy Agency (IEA) conducted a spatial analysis of over 5 million locations worldwide. It found that production could reach the equivalent of nearly 1 trillion cubic meters of natural gas annually from feedstocks that can be considered sustainable, e.g., “wastes and residues that can be processed with existing technologies and do not compete with food systems, for instance.”

The International Energy Agency released a report that is “a first of its kind” geospatial assessment on the untapped potential of locally produced, low-emissions fuels created from organic waste.
