Here is another shot of the 90 acre Longleaf pine stand we put a late growing season fire into last weekend. Temps got to around 91, RH got to 54%, light NE wind, and we had a great fuel bed to carry it through the stand. Ignition patterns and techniques varied based on topography and fuels throughout. Low and slow was the goal. We killed a lot of hardwood stems with this fire and expect to get this stand pointed back in the right direction and keep it that way in the future.

Two things are amazing about this picture…

1) Beavers possess the digestive anatomy and strategy to feed on the cambium layer. Look up coprophagic digestive strategy.

2) Trees possess the ability to heal from being girdled by beavers.

I’m not going to call it a mutually beneficial relationship, but nature is pretty awesome.

This week, Native South Land and Wildlife Management tackled a major step in our ongoing restoration efforts on client properties: spraying non-native pasture grasses from air and ground to clear the way for native ground cover. Ecological restoration takes time and dedicated effort, and we’re happy to get this critical phase completed and keep the momentum going. We have great contractors and great clients; we are thankful for both.

We finally got the right conditions Saturday to get out and knock out a 90 acre late growing season fire in this Longleaf stand. Woody mid-story took a beating, and low and slow was the name of the game. We will provide post burn evaluations on this in the future. An electric pump on a skid with enough power (16gpm) to put water on target in the right amount is key for a variety of tasks on the fire line. This BLZ skid gets it done.
