Our life is short when compared to the potential lifespan of an oak.

Yes, this dense stand of hardwood regeneration will turn into a mature forest given time and natural succession. This same principle applies across multiple decisions when managing land/wildlife.

Let’s not make short-sighted decisions that will negatively affect the generations after us simply because we lack perspective…a mistake we have made all too often in the history of game and land management.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again—every species we plant summer plots for evolved almost (for those who would want to argue about native agriculture) entirely without them. I’m not anti-food plot, but we need to look at the big picture in time and space. Don’t let corporate game management warp your perspective on what is necessary for wildlife to thrive.

Try this instead of summer food plots 👇👇

Who would have thought that managing natural systems in the way they were meant to be managed produces great results?

You can't plant your way out of a landscape-level habitat issue, and big hunting corporate interests do not always have wildlife conservation interests at heart.

We, as foresters, wildlife biologists, and managers, do not know everything there is to know about ecology and management of natural systems, but we can always learn if we're not afraid to admit that and keep learning and observing.

Do not be afraid to go against the grain.

Stay curious, my friends.

A picture is worth 1,000 words.

This snapshot showcases the native seed bank in a 30-acre old-field conversion we are doing for a client in Geneva Co., AL.

In this one picture, there are several native plant species that will help sustain fauna of all types in the area and improve the carrying capacity for this property's desired game species as we continue to kill non-native, mat-forming grasses (Bahia, in this case).

We aren’t done yet, but the native seed bank here is surely promising.

Here’s to Bobwhite quail whistling in the South now and in the future.

Post-burn assessments are critical because they allow you to see if your objectives are being met. I especially like to do them into the growing season because it allows me to get an assessment of the overall community response and plan for adjustments if needed. I highly recommend going back and checking your work throughout the year.

This is going to be/is a dynamite property for many reasons. I wanted to showcase the plant community response on the first burn post timber thinning.
