Jingle Bells was not originally a Christmas song. While it is now a Christmas staple, it began life in 1857 as a secular winter tune titled The One-Horse Open Sleigh. Composer James Lord Pierpont wrote it not for Christmas, but to capture the excitement of popular sleigh races in Massachusetts. Historical accounts suggest it was even performed during Thanksgiving services, cementing its role as a seasonal, rather than holiday-specific, song.

The song history also has a complex side often omitted from modern retellings. Early performances of The One-Horse Open Sleigh were featured in blackface minstrel shows, a popular but deeply problematic form of entertainment in that era. The jingle bells themselves were a practical safety feature on sleighs, warning pedestrians of their quiet approach on snow-packed roads. The song was only re-copyrighted under the now-famous Jingle Bells title in 1859.
