Criminal proceedings have been suspended for Thomas Caleb Butler, 32, the suspect accused in the fatal May 20 attack on 69-year-old Kerry Sheron outside his well known Escondido “Trump House.”
A judge paused the murder case after Butler refused to leave his jail cell, ordering a mental competency evaluation before a July 17 CARE Court hearing.
Butler, a Navy veteran reportedly struggling with PTSD, faces 28 years to life in prison.
Escondido Police are still investigating a motive including whether there was a political component but note no evidence currently supports that theory. Investigators are also looking into any prior contact between the two men.
