An elderly woman survived after being swept away by water near Lake Hodges Thursday morning.

A man called 911 at about 8:10 a.m. to report that he and his wife were walking arm in arm through water when she was swept away by a strong current. Authorities responded, establishing a significant rescue effort with assistance from multiple agencies. Rescue personnel worked for about an hour to find the missing woman but could not successfully locate her.

A helicopter from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department eventually arrived over the scene and quickly found the woman lying in a stream of water near the lake. A paramedic was then lowered down from the helicopter to reach the woman, who did not suffer serious injuries.

The woman’s husband suffered a small laceration but was also not seriously hurt. The pair has since been reunited.
