BREAKING: A newborn baby macaque was born today at Punchy’s Zoo… but heartbreakingly, the baby passed away only a short time later.

The zoo shared that this was the seventh birth of the year at Monkey Mountain — moments that usually bring hope, excitement, and new energy to the troop. Every new life becomes part of the group’s story, which makes losses like this feel even heavier.

And it’s more than just a sad moment that fades away.

It changes the atmosphere. The behavior of the group. The balance within their world.

Especially after the recent incident involving an intruder, when the environment had already been disrupted and the monkeys were dealing with stress and uncertainty.

Situations like this remind people how delicate life inside these animal communities can be.

When people watch Punchy and the others, they often see playful moments and entertaining chaos. But behind that is a real social group where every birth matters, every bond is important, and every loss leaves an impact.

That’s the side many people never truly see.

The young elephant calf had a daily routine that melted the hearts of everyone at the sanctuary. Every morning, even before breakfast arrived, the little rescue elephant would hurry to the same stone ledge, stretch its tiny front feet over the edge, and peek out as if eagerly waiting for someone special. The caretakers often laughed, saying the calf looked more like a giant curious puppy than an elephant.
What made the scene even more adorable was the calf’s bright orange fuzzy hair sticking straight up across its head. After rolling around in the dirt and taking dusty naps, the messy tuft never seemed to stay flat for long. The rescue team secretly adored it because it perfectly reflected the calf’s personality — playful, energetic, and endlessly curious about the world around it.
Just a few months earlier, the orphaned elephant had been frightened and unsure around people, carefully keeping its distance from the sanctuary staff. But through patience, kindness, and daily care, the calf slowly learned to trust the humans who protected and comforted it. Soon, the once-shy elephant began running excitedly toward familiar voices every morning.

In 2004, a sheep named Shrek became one of New Zealand’s most famous animals after disappearing from his farm for six years.

Unlike most sheep, Merinos need to be sheared every year because their wool never stops growing. Without shearing, the fleece becomes extremely heavy, traps heat and dirt, and can even make it difficult for the animal to move or see properly.

Shrek somehow avoided all of that for years by escaping into the rugged mountains of New Zealand’s South Island. He survived by hiding in caves and remote rocky areas where farmers were unable to find him.

When Shrek was finally discovered, he looked almost unbelievable — like a giant ball of wool with legs. His fleece had grown to around 27 kilograms, enough wool to produce clothing for many people. The massive coat covered much of his body and face, making movement difficult, yet he was still alive and surprisingly healthy.

After his rescue, Shrek was carefully sheared on live television, instantly turning him into a national celebrity across New Zealand.
