🐾 A Little Pause for Paws & Tails

Things might be a little quiet around here for the next couple of weeks. I’m going through some things personally, and right now, posting needs to take a back seat for a little while.

Paws & Tails isn’t going anywhere. ❤️ I just need to give myself some space to focus on what’s in front of me.

Six days since our last post… so naturally, we’re returning with absolute catnip chaos. 😂🐈‍⬛🌿

Apparently, three cats, two plates of catnip, and one bed were all that was needed to turn the bedroom into a full-blown catnip crime scene.

The faces say it all. 😂

🐾 One is investigating the evidence.
🐾 One is completely zoned out.
🐾 And one looks like they’re wondering how everyone else got so high on the same tiny pile of catnip.

Just another day in the life of the Paws & Tails household. 🐾💚

Did you know cats can spend around 30–50% of their waking hours grooming themselves? 🧼🐾

That’s a whole lot of time dedicated to keeping those fluffy little faces looking fabulous. 😂

Title: A Lesson in Dog Safety

Something happened recently that reminded me just how quickly a situation involving dogs can change, and how important it is to understand each animal’s individual needs, boundaries, and behaviors.

Even dogs who are incredibly sweet and loving can react differently in certain situations. Things can happen in seconds, and what seems like a completely ordinary moment can suddenly become something much more serious.

It was a difficult experience, and one that I’m still processing. But it also reminded me why communication, preparation, and understanding animal behavior are so important when caring for pets.

Sometimes the biggest lessons come from experiences we wish we never had to experience in the first place.

Know the animals in your care. Understand their boundaries. Ask questions. Communicate. And never underestimate how quickly a situation can change. 🐾❤️

🐾 From “Please Give Me Space” to “I Remember You” ❤️

Today I got to see two sweet girls I used to care for again after months apart, and seeing their reaction honestly made my heart so happy. 🥹

When I first started doing drop-ins for them, one of the girls was a very nervous pup. She would bark and growl at me and often hide in the living room, so I gave her what she needed: time, space, patience, and lots of treats. 🐶❤️

The treats helped create positive associations while she learned that I wasn’t going to force interaction and that she was safe with me. Visit after visit, she slowly became more comfortable.

Today, after months of not seeing them, they came running up with their tails wagging, clearly happy to see me. There was no barking, no hiding, and no hesitation. While I sat on the kitchen floor loving on her sister, she came over and sat right beside me and accepted some love too. 🥹🐾

That moment meant so much because I remember where we started.

Sometimes progress with animals isn’t about making them comfortable quickly. It’s about meeting them where they are, respecting their boundaries, and giving them the time they need to decide that you’re safe.

And sometimes, months later, they remember. ❤️

From needing lots of space to choosing to sit beside me. That’s the kind of progress that makes all those patient visits worth it. 🐶💕

🐾 Respecting a Pet’s Boundaries Matters

One of the most important parts of caring for animals is recognizing when they simply want to be left alone.

Not every interaction needs to be a game. Intentionally blocking a pet’s path, teasing them, startling them, or testing their reactions may seem harmless to some people, but it can create unnecessary frustration or stress for the animal.

The best way to build trust is often the simplest: let them move freely, respect their space, and allow them to choose when and how they interact.

Every pet deserves to feel safe in their own home. Sometimes the kindest thing we can do is simply let them be. ❤️🐾

Seventeen days away from home taught me a lesson I wasn’t expecting.

I love what I do, but I also learned that being away from my own routine and my own pets for that long takes more out of me than I realized. Sometimes experience is the only way to discover where your boundaries are.

That doesn’t mean I love pet sitting any less. It means I now have a better understanding of the types of bookings where I can give every pet the care they deserve while also taking care of myself.

Growth isn’t just learning what you can do. It’s also learning what helps you do your best. 🐾❤️

🐾 Pet Myth or Fact?

“A wagging tail always means a dog is happy.”

❌ Myth!

While a wagging tail can mean excitement, dogs also wag their tails when they’re nervous, unsure, or overstimulated. The position, speed, and the rest of their body language tell the real story.

🐶 Loose body + relaxed wag = usually friendly and comfortable.

⚠️ Stiff body + high, fast wag = take a moment to read the situation before approaching.

Learning to read your pet’s body language helps build trust and keeps everyone safer.

🐾 A Gentle Reminder for Every Pet Owner 🐾

This week reminded me of something important.

Our pets don’t always make the best choices. Puppies bite leashes, dogs get excited, cats scratch furniture, and sometimes they test every ounce of our patience. They’re learning.

How we respond matters.

Training takes time, consistency, and kindness. Fear and physical punishment don’t teach our pets what we want them to do. They deserve guidance, patience, and understanding.

As pet care professionals and pet owners, we’re all advocates for the animals who depend on us.

❤️ Be patient.
🐾 Reward good behavior.
📚 Keep learning.
🗣️ Speak up if you witness an animal being mistreated.

Our pets trust us completely. Let’s give them the compassion and care they deserve.

Today, while walking a dog I was caring for, I witnessed something heartbreaking.

I observed a dog being forcefully struck and hit with a rope leash. It was upsetting to watch, and I wanted to share what I learned afterward in case it helps someone else.

If you witness suspected animal abuse:
🐾 Call 911 immediately if it’s actively happening.
🐾 Stay at a safe distance and, if it’s safe to do so, document what you see.
🐾 Report the incident to your local animal control and organizations like the Anti-Cruelty Society.

I reported what I witnessed, but I wasn’t aware at the time that 911 should be called while the abuse is actively occurring. I hope sharing this information helps someone else know what to do.

Animals depend on us to speak up when they can’t. Even if you never learn the outcome, your report could be the one that starts a paper trail and helps protect an animal in the future. 🐾💙
