⚔️ Bayonets, side arms, and a katana from the Battle of Attu.

Alaska Veterans Museum historian Mr. Dennis Dupras walks through the personal weapons carried into the only major land battle fought on North American soil during World War II. These arms tell the story of close-quarters fighting in the harsh, unforgiving conditions of Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, and the men on both sides who carried them.

A brutal, often overlooked chapter of history, preserved through the artifacts left behind.

The Battle of Attu, May 1943. The only WWII land battle fought on North American soil. Fought in Arctic fog, mud, and freezing temperatures across 19 days. It ended in one of the most devastating banzai charges of the Pacific War. Over 2,350 Japanese soldiers and more than 500 Americans killed on a single remote Aleutian island.

The Japanese Type 94 37mm anti-tank gun in that display case behind our subject is one of the weapons that was actually there. We sat down in front of it and talked about what happened.
