Gazing Grain Press

Gazing Grain Press Inclusive feminist chapbook press from GMU MFA alumni. Sponsored by Fall for the Book literary festival. Open to all genders & sexualities. Gazing Grain Press was founded in 2012 by a group of three recent alumni of George Mason University’s MFA program--poets Siwar Masannat, M.

Mack, and Alyse Knorr. The Gazing Grain Feminist Chapbook Contest is generously sponsored by the Fall for the Book literary festival, an annual, week-long event based out of George Mason University. Our name derives from a line in the poem “[Because I could not stop for Death],” by one of our favorite feminist poets, Emily Dickinson. Submission Guidelines:

Feminist Interview Series: Fox Frazier-Foley author of “Like Ash in the Air After Something Has Burned“ | gazinggrainpress

We interviewed Fox Frazier-Foley about her beautiful book, Like Ash in the Air After Something Has Burned, for our Feminist Interview Series. Check it out!

"I was really irritated and disturbed by the eagerness with which the Church historians in the documentary all scrambled to reassure viewers that Pope Joan never existed. After a point, it stopped irritating me and began to infuriate me. These people believe in all sorts of other narratives that can’t possibly be verified—raising of the dead on multiple occasions, miraculously healing people with serious illnesses and physical afflictions, the parting of the Red Sea—but if we entertain the possibility that someone who was not considered a man did something brave and interesting and ambitious, suddenly the g-ddamn sky is falling? Really? Why is that so far-fetched? Who gains from the dismissal or suppression of these narratives?"

Sarah Marcus-Donnelly: This book is a beautiful meditation on gender expression as deception, threat, protection, absolution, violence, and condemnation.

Feminism, Pop-culture, & Selfveillance with Hannah Bonner | gazinggrainpress

Excited to share our interview with Hannah Bonner!

"I think selfveillance hinders our ability to become or develop when we are mediating and monitoring ourselves according to the expectations of being constantly under watch. Not to get too Foucauldian, but if we are recurrently aware of how others see us, it indelibly changes our behavior. I think Lena Dunham was successfully balancing her own selfveillance on the show through her presentation of her body and the way in which she as the author and the director constructed the narrative and discourse around her body on the show. I was beyond disappointed in her defense of accused rapist Murray Miller because it was something I would have expected from Hannah Horvath as a character who constantly puts her foot in her mouth. It was frustrating to see a moment where the author and character collapse in a way that directly harms feminism and the conversation around rape culture."

"The other is to go for the jugular—writing about oneself is already vulnerable, so best to do it with ferocity. There is no better place to be honest and flawed than on the page, and while you certainly want to write with an audience in mind, you never want to write in fear of their judgment. Write it messy, write it fragmented, circular, strange. Don’t skirt around circumstance or sand down the rough edges—write what is hard, painful, scathing, sharp. Take readers to the very marrow of your story."

I wanted to say that my identity determines my opportunities to make a living, how much or little time I get to spend writing, and what I write about. But, that's all rubbish... writers would do better focusing on doing the work rather than "the writer's identity". That feels like a privilege.

Biggest congratulations to GGP author Heidi Czerwiec!

We are very pleased to announce Fluid States by Heidi Czerwiec was selected by Dinty W. Moore and will be published next year. Moore praised this book, saying “Fluid States offers essays that are eclectic, unexpected, and entirely inventive. As the title suggests, the book flows briskly, a river infused with a keen intelligence and subtle wit, rendered in aromatic prose. One of the joys of reading is learning new details of our endlessly capacious world, and with her deeply-researched essays and enticing voice, Heidi Czerwiec delivers.”

We also would like to commend the other finalists and semi-finalists, whose manuscripts in our opinion were all outstanding and publishable.

Finalists: Beth Alvarado, Kiik Araki- Kawaguchi, Bradley Bazzle, Katharine Haake, Jen Hirt, Evan Lavender-Smith, Jill Logan, Laura Schwartz, Maya Sonenberg

Semi-finalists: Noelle Catharine Allen, Polly Buckingham, Nicole Cooley, Debra Di Blasi, Jehanne Dubrow, Kevin Ducey, Abby Frucht, Wendell Mayo, Jennifer Murvin, Eric Schlich, Dennis James Sweeney
