(Detroit, MI January 15, 2022) Crowds of protestors from the Midwest and as far away as New York are expected to join Michigan protesters on Sunday for a Civil Rights Rally about disturbing sexual assault allegations and poor conditions at The Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility Ypsilanti, MI.
This week two female whistleblowers who were former employees came forward with reports of drug distribution, sexual extortion, and assault by both male and female guards at the prison.
Growing concerns are also developing about drug distribution to imprisoned women who were participants of the program to combat opioid addictions. The facility has failed to provide medical attention to seriously ill inmates. Inmates are fearful of retaliation if they tell on correctional officers and administrators.
The Michigan Dept of Corrections had retaliated against the whistleblowers when they learned of the women's intent to inform higher authorities and expose these crimes. The women terminated when Huron Valley confiscated logs and documents containing Huron Valley perpetrators. The workers have expressed that the culture of sexual punishment is widely accepted among the ranks. Inmates have said that they have no protection from physical and sexual assault from guards, despite lawsuit settlements with plaintiffs just a few years ago.
The women have retained Dionne Webster-Cox, a Southfield Civil Rights attorney.
In a statement from Webster-Cox, she says, "I am disturbed by these allegations. As we commemorate the work and life of Dr. King, a civil rights legend on this weekend, I want you to know we must ensure that the criminal justice system treats women fairly and without assault. The system is obligated to protect women's safety and provide them with healthcare while in the state's custody without violating their civil rights. Injustice Anywhere is a fight for Justice Everywhere."

Attorney Webster-Cox will speak at a Civil Rights Rally to be held on Sunday, January 16, 2022, at 12 noon at 3201 Bemis Rd, Ypsilanti, MI, in partnership with Silent Cry and Survivors Speak to discuss these deplorable conditions and horrendous abuse these women face daily.
Two Michigan women, former workers at The Women’s Huron Valley Women's Correctional Facility, located in Ypsilanti, MI, have come forward with disturbing reports about sexual assaults of female inmates. The women sought help for inmates when learning of sexual assault, sexual extortion by both male and female guards at the prison but were ignored.
Growing concerns are also developing about drug distribution to imprisoned women who were participants of the program to combat opioid addictions. The facility also failed to provide medical attention to seriously ill inmates and extreme delays in treatment. Inmates are fearful of retaliation if they tell on correctional officers and administrators.

In a statement from Webster-Cox, she says "The prison violates The Prison R**e Elimination Act of 2003, which is supposed to combat this behavior, not compel sexual misconduct within our institutions. We maintain there should be zero tolerance for sexual violence, staff sexual misconduct, and sexual harassment at Huron Valley Women's Correction Facility for all offenders under its jurisdiction. Yesterday, we gathered to rally for Benjamin and his family. His mom, Makia Dixson, said her son hasn't been the same since April 16.
"Benjamin was always my good kid. He always just wanted to play basketball. He really doesn’t want to do too much. All he wants to do is sit in the house and play games," Dixson said.
Family attorney Dionne Webster-Cox said it happened while Benjamin and his dad were at Briarwood Mall. Ann Arbor Police shut down a road nearby due to a shooting investigation and Webster-Cox said his dad drove in the opposite direction of where police told drivers to go.
"What happened on April 16, 2021, was a travesty," said Cox. "What happened on April 16, 2021, makes me sick,"
"Every time he sees the police, he gets scared," his mom said.

Children who have experienced trauma are more likely to suffer from mental health disorders, such as depression or anxiety, display anti-social behavior, and have trouble focusing on school after this physical and psychological abuse.
Unfortunately, the effects are long-lasting: As adults, these children are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol, develop chronic illnesses, to attempt su***de.
