So much is inaccurate about this article of yours that it's actually a disservice to the community of disabled individuals that utilize service dogs and emotional support animals. Let me correct some of the many inaccuracies: "Service animals can be a huge help to humans in many ways, as they are trained to assist their owners. For example, people with disabilities can be led and supported by a seeing eye dog, or some animals can provide therapy or support for people with mental health issues. These animals can be categorized as emotional support animals, or ESAs, and with the right credentials can be allowed to accompany their owners in many pet-banned places." Service Animals, Emotional Support Animals and Therapy Animals are all separate legally and in what they do. They aren't interchangeable. A Service Animal is very highly trained and task trained to mitigate an individual's disability. They can only be dogs and mini horses per federal law.; Emotional support animals need no training and provide comfort, companionship and support to the mentally disabled. Any domestic animal within reason can be an ESA but all local zoning and pet ownership laws must be obeyed.; Therapy animals help others, not their owners, and must be obedience trained, friendly and calm. Any animal that the Therapy organization you join allows is permitted. ONLY service animals are a protected civil right under the ADA ...and ONLY service animals can accompany their owners into business that don't permit animals. "In order to qualify a pet as an emotional support animal, the owner must justify their emotional need for the animal. According to the National Service Animal Registry, this owner must be deemed as an emotionally disabled person by a licensed health professional, such as a therapist or psychologist, and provide a prescription letter to prove it. " The National Service Animal Registry is a scam registry. Nothing they sell has any legal standing. What they sell is literally worth LESS than USED toilet paper. The ONLY legal way to have your need for an ESA recognized is to go and set up a treatment plan with a local mental health professional that, be diagnosed as MENTALLY DISABLED and, over the course of your treatments, your treating mental health professional will determine whether an ESA would be beneficial to your treatment plan. They will then write you a letter stating you can have an ESA. The letter must be in office letterhead and must include their name, office address, license number, phone number, your diagnosis in the DSM-IV. "With this certification, owners can have these animals in apartments or buildings that normally wouldn’t allow them, bring them to work or bring them on airplanes without having to pay a pet fee. More and more people are showing up to airports expecting that their ESA will accompany them in the cabin for mental support. This sparks the question about whether these animals should be allowed everywhere, even on airplanes." THERE IS NO LEGAL CERIFICATION, REGISTRATION, LICENSURE OR ID. The type of ESA must not conflict with local zoning laws and are only given TWO special accommodations - under HUD/FHAct for rental housing and under the Air Carriers Access Act (ACAA) to fly in cabin on an airplane. New rules and regulations have been put in place under the ACAA and with individual airlines because of the blatant, unregulated fraud and from incidents where ESA's have attacked other passengers. If you're flying with a legitimate ESA, you must contact the airline you're flying with at least 4 weeks in advance to determine what they need and get the information to them for verification. Under HUD/FHAct, a landlord is only required to provide "reasonable accommodation". That means, no, you can't force your landlord to let you have a horse in an apartment. If you have a breed of dog that insurance doesn't like, if the landlords insurance will rise drastically, and they can't find a comparable policy, they can reasonably deny you accommodation. As for bringing an ESA to work, NO. Only task trained, highly trained Service Animals have public access rights with their qualified owners. Some businesses may allow ESA's in by their own choice, but they're not forced by any law to have to allow it. "The New York Times also says that animals of all kinds are being considered ESAs, from reptiles to insects. Is there a line that should be drawn for what animals are safe to board a plane?" The ACAA does not allow the same species of animals that HUD/FHAct does. For example, airlines do not permit reptiles, spiders, exotic species... "I would say that if the pet is a certified ESA and will behave safely and stay in the arms of their owner, they should have no trouble being allowed on an airplane. It is true that an ESA, especially untrained, could definitely create problems, such as causing an allergic reaction to another passenger, or if the animal feels threatened or scared, it could lash out and even attack someone. An untrained animal could also interfere with the operations of the airline employees, which could put everyone on the plane in danger. However, to prevent these issues, it should be more difficult to obtain an ESA certification, because of these possible dangers that could come with untrained or uncertified pets being allowed on airplanes. It might be okay to try and sneak your pets into an apartment with an ESA certification, but not on a plane, where people’s lives are at stake." First, remember, THERE IS NO LEGAL CERIFICATION. Every scam business (like the National Service Animal Registry) that claims to register & certify ESA's and service dogs are scams specifically because they 1) Do not verify if the owner is even qualified to have a service dog or emotional support animal, and 2) Do not verify that the animal is even potty trained, let alone that it has basic obedience or that it's not aggressive. THEY ONLY WANT YOUR MONEY. Please feel free to contact me, or please only research on .Gov sites to verify information if you do another story about ESA's, service animals or therapy animals.
Thoughts from a former teacher and present patriot: “These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country. But he that stands by it now deserves the love and thanks of men and women.” Thomas Paine, 1776. Paine was taking about the need for real patriots to come forward, think, and act in their country’s interests. I am addressing this, not to summer soldiers, but to patriots who can think and defend the innate decency of this country and its greatness. Many feel that America is confronted with immorality, strange lifestyles, political correctness, and condescension toward conservatives and the Christian message. Secular do-goodism and political correctness have not made our communities happier. Mainstream Americans feel replaced. Self-righteous activists threaten religious liberty and liberty on college campuses. However - different people get their needs met in different ways. Are people who seem so different really affecting me or trying to replace me - or should we allow them to follow their own path? Looking at Jesus’ entire message, what would He say to people who genuinely love people of their own s*x? What would He feel about His fellow Jews who may think or believe differently than me? How would He handle refugees fleeing to America with their kids? In Matthew, Jesus showed His sense of humor when He asked, “How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while there is still a beam in your own? First take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's.” In a few weeks, we will vote. I hope you will register and vote. I hope you will join me in voting for decency and for the best that America can be. Tim Hathaway
