Heat Check is back, and the production took a serious step up.
The early episodes were shot on an iPhone — and honestly, those came out fire. But we've been building, and this one is a full on-set production: industry cameras, a proper lighting setup, post-production that finally got the time it deserved, and a new ULX HQ to shoot it in.
Episode one back is Trill.md, a hip hop producer out of Fairfield, California who joined the ULX team just over a year ago.
We asked him what Fairfield sounds like. "It's chaotic. It's beautiful. It's melodic — hurts a little too."
We asked about the first beat he ever made. "It definitely hit, but I wasn't quantizing. I didn't know about EQ. I was just bare bones. That raw stuff has its own kind of sound — so I wouldn't say it was bad, but it definitely wasn't good."
We asked how he knows a beat is finished. "First you gotta do the car test. And if people are freestyling around you, that's a good sign. I don't know if a beat's ever really done, though."
And on the most overrated thing producers do, he didn't hold back — type beats. "Type beats are cool. But what about YOUR type of beat? You have an opportunity to really let your voice be heard."
