💛 Hello, Femmes - for March/April Book Club we’re reading: “Nobody’s Girl: A Memoir of Surviving Abuse and Fighting for Justice” is the posthumous memoir by Virginia Giuffre, detailing her abuse by Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, and prominent figures like Prince Andrew. Co-written with Amy Wallace, it was published by Alfred A. Knopf after Giuffre’s passing. In this deeply personal narrative, Giuffre shares her journey from exploitation to advocacy, offering insight into coercion, survival, and the long path toward reclaiming her voice. While challenging (TW: content contains details of CSA), her account is critical to read, as it sheds light on the ongoing corruption and erasure victims continue to fight against.
💜 We’re pairing this with “Sold” by Patricia McCormick, a novel that follows a young girl from Nepal who is sold into trafficking. Told through spare, poetic vignettes, it offers a moving portrayal of endurance and hope in the face of exploitation. “Sold” has also been frequently challenged by book banners due to its subject matter – and we’re especially honored that McCormick has spoken at our local public library, helping bring awareness to the issues explored in her work.
💜💛 Together, these readings create space for meaningful, thoughtful conversation about exploitation and the ongoing fight for justice. We invite you to join us – and if you’re new here, welcome, please request to be admitted to our private Facebook Group for further event details 👆 in the link in our bio.

💛❤️ Tonight we’re diving into “All About Love” by bell hooks—a powerful invitation to reconsider what love truly means and how it shapes our lives and communities.

At a time when love does not seem to be guiding our country in life-giving or just directions, this book feels especially urgent. And yet, alongside division and fear, we are also witnessing powerful uprisings of love as resistance—people choosing compassion over cruelty, community over isolation, courage over silence. hooks helps us name love as a transformative force—one that is grounded in care, respect, and responsibility and that can move us toward the kind of connection and justice we are seeking right now.

Accessible yet profound, this book is sure to spark meaningful conversation, as we build community. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts and reflections.

Hope to see you tonight! 💛📖

Are you enjoying this month’s book selection? 💜 In “All About Love,” bell hooks argues that love is not just a feeling but a verb —a deliberate practice rooted in care, respect, responsibility, and honesty. Here, she refers to love as a combination of care, knowledge, responsibility, commitment and trust, citing The Art of Loving, a 1956 book by psychoanalyst and social philosopher Erich Fromm. How does this reflection of hers on our culture’s over-emphasis on romantic love land with you?

💛👉 For our last bookclub this year, we are reading Andrea Gibson’s 2021 poetry collection, “You Better Be Lightning.’ I also want to figure out how we can together screen their new documentary, Come See Me in the Good Light! I am open for thoughts on how to do this… Here are a few options I see:
1️⃣ Gather as planned and focus discussion on the book.
2️⃣ Discuss the book + invite folks to stand up and read Gibson’s poetry
3️⃣ Screen the film + discuss the book during an expanded 3-hr book club.
Please vote in the poll, or comment with your ideas!

We talked about it! 💬

Imagine how different our world would be if we had open and inclusive conversations with our kids and each other about healthy relationships and s*x rather than succumbing to shame, ignorance, and silence. Most of us in this group probably already do to some extent, but if you’re like me, and s*x was shrouded in shame and secrecy, or even trauma, you may still have some areas where you struggle with these conversations. And of course s*x and society are constantly changing, so how do we keep up and know what our kids are learning on social media and among each other? We have to ask them, which works much better when we create open, safe dialogue. 🌸

We want to give warm gratitude and respect to Christina and Miranda who came with a wealth of knowledge and created a judgment-free space for us to ask questions and talk. These two amazing women have dedicated so much energy and heart towards keeping s*x education comprehensive and inclusive, all the while standing up against those who promote risk avoidance (abstinence only/purity culture) as the ONLY option, who are actively trying to remove condom demonstration or birth control, who give medically inaccurate info, who are trying to erase q***r education altogether, who use shame tactics, and who seek to remove healthy and age-appropriate books about s*x and reproduction from libraries. To fight, we have to arm ourselves with information and data, which these two continue to do.

And, a big thanks to Elizabeth for educating us about the books being banned and/or reshelved into the adult section where they cannot be accessed by those they’re intended for. 📚

Most of us know the harm that silence and shame create, so let’s continue to have these open discussions and get involved with these orgs who are already doing the work.

💛 For the first time, FemmSouth members gathered for a Fall Festival celebration—part book club, part witchy dance—to delve deeper into themes in our October book club picks, “The Creation of Patriarchy” (Gerda Lerner) and “Witches and Pagans” (Max Dashu)❤️‍🔥 We’re so grateful for the gifts of shared sacred space, finding movement (or stillness) that expresses whatever the body and spirit need, under the stars by a bonfire… it was pure, empowering magic! Thank you to those who joined, and to DJ Burnzz for leading us first in a reading from “The Great Cosmic Mother” (Barbara Mor)✨🔥🎆 We hope next fall brings us together again to connect and dance beneath the moonlight and the swaying trees!
