In late October, the EPA announced nearly $1 billion was awarded through the Clean School Bus Rebate Lottery program to support 389 school districts across the country with their school bus electrification projects. Richland County School District One in Columbia, South Carolina, the 11th-largest school district in the state, was one of the winners.

If you rode the bus to school, you no doubt remember your cue to run out of the house: That diesel engine roaring down the street. 🚌 💨 But students who attend Richland County School District One in Columbia, South Carolina will need to start getting to the bus stop a few minutes early, as the district is swapping their diesel buses for ones with electric powertrains. ⚡

On this episode of The Amped EV Podcast, we catch up with the transportation director, Rick Grisham, to understand why the district wants to transition to electric, what the process has been like and who the major stakeholders are to make the district's plans a reality. We also talk to Mabel Feng, the director of product management at Proterra Inc., to hear about the technology that powers the school buses, charging solutions, infrastructure and management software Richland One is using.

We never turn down an opportunity to see a fun new EV concept in person, so this week we're headed to Detroit, as our friends at Sono Motors have invited us to experience the Sion, a solar-powered electric car being developed for the masses.

Sono says these cells can extend the Sion’s estimated 190-mile battery range by an average of 70 miles per week in typical weather conditions and by as much as 150 miles per week in optimal conditions.

Editor's Note: Sono Motors CEOs Jona Christians and Laurin Hahn released a public statement Dec. 8 explaining Sono's financial struggles with its Sion solar EV program. To keep the company's ambitious plans for the car alive, Sono has launched a 50-day campaign dubbed " ," asking its over 21,000 reservation holders to commit to a solar EV purchase to help get the Sion into production mode. Reservations can only be made by people in Europe. Sono won't accept reservations from people in the U.S. If the company is not successful, it will turn its focus to its B2B solar business offerings.

It’s one thing to simply explain the benefits of EV tires, but it’s another to truly experience them and why they’re so important to your ride. So, today we’re going to Los Angeles, California, to get that experience for ourselves, courtesy of a Tesla Model 3 spec’d with Sailun Tire's ERange EV tire.

And, I’d be curious to know what your experience with EV tires is and what your thoughts are. Did you see a major difference there? Do you recommend them?

Today I’m back again to answer the question: Why do you need to equip your EV with tires that are designed specifically for EVs?It’s one thing to simply expl...

Everyone is talking about EVs, so getting caught up in the hype is easy. The problem is, EVs aren't yet suitable for every use case, and jumping into electrifying your fleet with eyes closed can have severe consequences.

Fear not, though – there is help to be had. Geotab's EV Suitability Assessment Tool is a great place to start the journey. To walk us through how it works and learn about saving money via the Inflation Reduction Act, we invite Charlotte Argue, senior manager of Sustainable Mobility at Geotab, onto the show.

There are all sorts of use cases for an all-electric delivery van out there. In fact, The Shyft Group is betting that by designing and manufacturing its own Class 3-5 Blue Arc chassis and bodies in-house from the ground up, using well-respected component suppliers like Dana for eAxles and Hendrickson for single leaf-spring suspensions, the company can lead the pack when it comes to electrifying commercial fleets.

10/11/2022

Typically, when we think of an EV being charged, we think of unidirectional charging. This means the battery is being charged by taking AC energy from the grid and converting it to DC energy that can later be used by the car battery to power the vehicle. It’s a one-way flow of energy that’s an ends to a means.

Bidirectional charging switches up the formula and allows the EV to send power back the other way, which means the EV turns into something like a power bank that can provide power to your home or back to the grid. When you hear terms like “Vehicle to Grid” or “Vehicle to Home,” that’s bidirectional charging.

What does this mean for EV owners? It means the potential for saving some green via their respective energy provider.

Is California's Advanced Clean Cars II rule actually good for the environment?

As technology stands today, EVs are good in some ways and bad in others, environmentally speaking. EV batteries at the end of their life are hard to dispose of, oftentimes just sitting in warehouses with the hope that the right technology will one day come along to truly dispose of them properly, profitably, with little environmental impact.

There’s also the mining issue to discuss, as rare metals – many of which, like cobalt, aren’t mined much in the U.S. – are necessary to keep these cars moving. Some companies are even turning to mining minerals from the ocean floor to keep up, and who knows what the environmental impact of such a task will end up being. Probably not good, if I had to guess.

However, there is obviously good to be had here, too, especially in controlling pollutants in the actual state of California. CARB says transportation is the single largest source of global warming emissions and air pollution in the state, adding that by 2037, the regulation will deliver a 25% reduction in smog-causing pollution from light-duty vehicles.

When people start talking about EVs, the big ol' lithium-ion battery tends to get a lot of the limelight. But EVs have dozens of other components needed to make them operate as expected, including another, smaller battery. Yep, just like a car with an internal combustion engine, most EVs require a 12V battery in addition to the big one at center stage.

But why? 🤔🔋

When the CEO of one of the largest diesel engine manufacturers in the world says we've got a carbon emissions problem, it might be worth sitting up a little straighter and engaging in the conversation.

"We have to do things proactively to change the calculus or we’re going to have some very, very difficult explaining to do. And I, personally, don’t want to be the one bouncing my grandkid on my knee to explain to them why I stood by and did nothing while the planet got hotter," said Tom Linebarger, chairman and CEO, Cummins, during this year's ACT Expo.
