The Next Feminist Wave About to Hit - Falls Church News-Press Online

A friend recently gave me one of those extreme wide-angle-lens black and white framed photographs that had belonged to his dad who was a White House correspondent in the 1940s. I had it hung in my office as a poignant object lesson, asking visitors to take a close look and …

"How to Survive a Plague" by David France (2016). Reviewed by Nicholas Benton, author, Extraordinary Hearts

David France has been involved in the New York gay scene since, by coincidence, almost precisely the time that the AIDS epidemic was first noted in the press in July 1981. So, aside from the previous decade following the 1969 Stonewall Riots, as a journalist he saw the plague and …

More food for thought from The LGBT Identity Project:

It wasn’t until Europeans took over North America that natives adopted the ideas of gender roles. For Native Americans, there was no set of rules that men and women had to abide by in order to be considered a “normal” member of their tribe. In fact, people who had both female and male characteristic...

Extraordinary Hearts: Reclaiming Gay Sensibility's Central Role in the Progress of Civilization

The LGBT Identity Project draws heavily but not exclusively from the ground breaking, best selling book, "Extraordinary Hearts, Reclaiming Gay Sensibility's Central Role in the Progress of Civilization" (Lethe Press, 2010), by Nicholas Benton. Larry Kramer said the book is "a vital moral book about who we are and who we should be. I admire it and its author enormously." In the Gay and Lesbian Review, Douglas Sadownick writes of the book, It "makes an important visionary argument: biological procreation must give way to other, more conscious forms of creativity if we are to survive as a species."

Larry Kramer wrote this about Extraordinary Hearts, .

The purpose of the "LGBT Identity Project" is to advance understanding of the core identity of LGBT persons, our role in civilization and what makes us "tick" beyond sexual orientation. This is especially important in the wake of the Orlando massacre, which reminds us that while gains in legal protections are happening, almost as a corollary hate and violence are also on the rise. We must arm ourselves with an appreciation for ourselves as not only worthy of, but necessary and essential for the betterment of our wider society. This "LGBT Identity Project" draws on but is not limited to Nicholas Benton's ground breaking and best selling compilation of 100 essays published in book form as "Extraordinary Hearts, Reclaiming the Central Role of Gay Sensibility in the Advance of Civilization" (Lethe Press, 2012).
