Iowa City Autism Community distributing ‘Care Kits’ to high-need elementary schools

Each kit is complete with various items targeting sensory areas, such as tactile toys, mindfulness cards, visual sensory devices, noise-dampening headphones, and breathing exercise and mood identification papers.

Dina Bishara and Jessie Witherell have experienced the adage that no one knows a child’s needs better than a mother. Knowing this, the two founded the Iowa City Autism Community more than four years ago to support children with autism. There has been an autism support group in Iowa City for many y...

Experts say WCSD's snow day make-up plan may violate laws protecting children with disabilities

"It is random," said Deidre Hammon, an advocate for people with disabilities who has represented hundreds of families in meetings with the district. "I heard from a family who said their daughter couldn't do the work. I told them to send it back to the school and write, 'This fails to be in compliance with her IEP.'"

Did the Washoe County School District forget about children with disabilities when it launched digital days?

When Man With Autism Has Violent Reaction to Medication, Mom is Stunned by Officers' Compassionate Response

Bravo! A patient with autism spent two and a half hours being treated and medicated on a hospital examination table. For the duration of his hospital stay, the officers comforted him by singing songs, dancing, playing games and cheering him on through his discomfort.

Despite past miserable experiences with hospitals, the parents of an autistic son were overwhelmed by how kindly he was treated during his most recent trip.

'What did I do to my child?': As program for kids with disabilities suffers funding shortage, parents face hard decisions | Mississippi Today

Therapists who’ve left Mississippi’s First Steps program cite multiple reasons, from reduced reimbursement rates for appointments to billing delays to a decision to transition all contracted workers for the state into independent contractors. But all amount to the same thing: a funding shortage.

The roots of problems in Mississippi's early intervention program go much deeper than previously reported contract delays

Preventing musicians’ injuries leads to perfect harmony at USC

“Because many instruments require an asymmetrical method of holding and playing, we as occupational therapists must examine the differences that playing the instrument may have on both sides of the body."

Two USC schools strive to prevent musicians' injuries through occupational therapy and a Health & Wellness initiative. The aim: to help Trojans have a longer and healthier career.

The TCJA's Pass-Through Deduction Was Misguided From the Beginning

"Relying on older regulations that apply to another statute (Sec. 448), Treasury concluded that physical therapy businesses are ineligible for the deduction. But occupational therapy businesses still may be OK."

Treasury proposed new rules to clean up the problems with the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act's special deduction for pass-through businesses. But the law was misguided from the beginning and probably is unfixable.

Soooo, in this midst of a crisis, comes some good news: 😊 Months ago I made an adaptive device for someone that couldn’t take meds, couldn’t hold small cup in contracted hands, dropped meds, the aide couldn’t legally administer, & for infection control since ring is held & not the cup. The “Med Ring” cup evolved, & is now **patent pending & prototyped. ** Hoping it helps as many people with disabilities as an adaptive device & for the infection control purposes, etc. Keep you posted. Take care! Adrienne Landry Lay, OT

TAKE OUR SURVEY TO ADDRESS THE OTA/PTA MODIFIER:
Dear OT Community, In response to the proposal for an OTA/PTA Modifier, which resulted from the BBA 2018, we have created a survey to address its possible ramifications. We are predicting that the OTA/PTA Modifier will result in countless unnecessary layoffs, similar to those we are seeing as a result of the implementation of the PDPM by Medicare. Please click the link and help us find a solution for this issue in practice. Please take our survey to address the OTA/PTA Modifier https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SQT9YXV Thank you!
Currently looking for PT, OT & SLPs for a Pediatric Home Health Company in the Harlingen and surrounding area including Brownsville, TX. Know anyone?
In light of recent events regarding PDPM and the mass layoffs, many therapists are reaching out to news outlets and politicians. However, without numerical and quantitative data, it is hard to truly gauge the scale of PDPM. Here is a survey that several therapists and I created. It is completely anonymous and you have do not need to log in to take it. The more data we can collect, the stronger our case to news outlets and politicians will be. This survey is being posted in several other rehab groups. If you take it once, please DO NOT take it again or else it may skew the data. The only people directly looking at the results are the therapists who created the survey because we are in active communication with various media outlets and political figures. However, if you feel more comfortable, you can copy the url below and post it on an incognito page or similar page while taking it. This survey takes about one minute to complete. Thank you all for your time.
