UCAA to issue January
commodities

Union Community Action Assoc., Inc. in Farmerville will distribute USDA Commodities Friday and Monday, Jan. 27 to pre-registered needy families under the Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana. Office hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Closed daily at noon for lunch). Everyone must bring a clean, sturdy box. Commodities are distributed according to household size, on a first-come first-serve basis. If you did not pre-register, you can register on Friday, Jan. 31 until 2 p.m. and if any food boxes remain, you will be able to pick it up at that time.

The Union Parish Sheriffs Office is currently conducting a manhunt in the northwestern part of the parish. They are searching for Mrio Ramirez, 30, who is wanted in connection with an aggravated r**e that occurred Monday night. Helicopters and dogs are being used in search of the suspect. If you have any information on the Ramirez, please call Union Parish CrimeStoppers at 318.368.9679. You do not have to leave your name. The investigation is continuing into the Monday night r**e and other details will be made available at a later date.

UCAA WILL BE ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR LOW INCOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE
Diane P. Hill, Director of Union Community Action Association, Inc. in Farmerville announces the 2013 Allocation of funds for the LOW INCOME HOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (LIHEAP) at the office at 202 E. Water Street, Farmerville, La.
Persons eligible for this assistance are those that have NOT received any assistance from this program in the previous 6 months, and falls within the income limits below. The Priority Groups include: 60 years of age or older, handicapped and receiving SSI or Social Security Disability, have a child 5 years of age or younger in the household. All eligibility will be based on income.
Appointments will be made by TELEPHONE ONLY on Monday, January 28, 2013 beginning at 8am until all appointments are assigned. Office hours are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. This assistance will be given on a first-come first-serve basis until all funds are expended. Call 368-9606 or 368-3118 to schedule an appointment date and time.
Applicants must bring their highest utility bill or a 12 month printout from the Utility Co., Social Security cards on every household member, current driver’s license or Picture ID, food stamp printout, if applicable and 2013 proof of income for each household member, examples of proof are, Social Security or SSI letters showing the amount of benefit each month, bank statement, if direct deposited, or last 4 consecutive check stubs, if employed. Applicant must bring in all documentation at time of appointment or may be required to be rescheduled.

Mardi Gras parade upcoming

The annual Krewe of D’Arbonne parade themed “Mardi Gras on the Bayou” will take place Saturday. Line up will be at 6 p.m. at the Farmerville High School parking lot. Participants are encouraged to follow theme but not required.

MLK celebration set for Saturday
This event will start at 9 a.m. with an opening ceremony in front of the Union Parish Court House, which will include participation from Farmerville High School Band and Carroll High School ROTC, followed by a 9:45 a.m. Unity March down Martin Luther King Drive to the Recreation Center at 116 Cox Ferry Rd., where the 11 a.m. program will take place. The theme of the event is “Living His Legacy Through Me.”

Mardi Gras ball, parade upcoming

The Krewe of D’Arbonne will be hosting the Third Annual Mardi Gras Ball Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Lake D’Arbonne Country Club. It will be a semi-formal affair with food provided. There will be a DJ and a photographer. Masks are not required but they are encouraged. Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased by the table or as a single ticket. Single tickets are $25 and a table of eight will be $160.
There will be an option to purchase event photo disks. Contact Lacy Adams through facebook or email [email protected] to purchase tickets.

Turkey hunting class at library

Join the Union Parish Library on Thursday, Feb. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. where we will learn tips and techniques on Turkey Hunting from the experts at Cedar Hill Turkey calls. Jerry Antley of Cedar Hill, representatives with the National Wild Turkey Foundation, Union Long Spurs in Farmerville, CorneyCreek Long Spurs in Bernice, and Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries will present information on habitat and hunting regulations.

Park to host hikes

Louisiana State Parks is sponsoring free guided hikes at two parks on New Year’s Day as part of America’s State Parks’ First Day Hikes project. First Day Hikes offer individuals and families an opportunity to begin the new year rejuvenating while connecting with the outdoors by taking a healthy hike on Jan. 1. First Day Hikes offer a great way to get outside, exercise and enjoy nature with friends and family.
Park staff and volunteers will lead hikes at Lake D’Arbonne State Park at 9 a.m., beginning at the Visitors Center. The hike will include about a mile of park trails and conclude with questions and answers at the Visitor Center. Park staff will make maps, clean-up supplies and information about the park available to participants. The event should last between one and two hours.

VFW New Years Eve dance

The VFW Albritton-Carter Post 5442 will host a New Year’s Eve dance at the VFW post from 8 p.m. to midnight. Cost is $10 per person. No smoking and no alcohol. You can bring a covered dish or finger food.

DART to distribute gifts

The Coordinated Community Response Team (CCRT) of our Union Parish DART office will host a holiday Angel Tree distribution Thursday at 6 p.m. at Blooming Grove Baptist Church in Farmerville to distribute holiday gifts to the children of families affected by domestic abuse and/or dating violence.
Refreshments are being coordinated by various churches within the community. Everyone is invited to attend.
If your organization, church, or business would like to “adopt” an angel from our tree and purchase an item to help bring joy to a child who may be adversely affected as a result of the abuse situation, please call 318-368-6181.

Early voting for the Saturday, Dec. 8 election, which includes a runoff for Town of Farmerville alderman District B, began Nov. 24 and continues through Saturday, Dec. 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily in the Registrar of Voter’s office in Farmerville.

FHS Turnaround Tuesday

Farmerville High will hold its Turnaround Tuesday event Nov. 27 in the FHS science wing from 5 to 7 p.m. They will cover math and science end-of-course tests. Teachers will give presentations in the science classrooms on Algebra I from 5 to 5:30 p.m.; Biology I from 5:30 to 6 p.m.; Geometry from 6 to 6;30 p.m. and Engineering from 6;30 to 7 p.m.
There will also be information on career planning, ACT and dual enrollment. Snacks will be provided and there will be a drawing for a graphing calculator.

Genealogical Society to meet

The Union County Genealogical Society will meet at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, at Barton Library, 200 E. Fourth St., El Dorado, Ark. The meeting is free and the public is invited to attend. The guest speaker, Truett West, will discuss his novel, ‘‘Louisiana Trouble.’’ The book is based on a true account that occurred in Union Parish, Louisiana in 1933 when swindlers concocted a bizarre scheme that set blacks and whites against one another.
West, who retired from a Union Parish law practice in 2008, holds a bachelor’s degree in economics as well as his law degree, and a master’s degree in American History.
He was a pastor of Southern Baptist churches before he went to law school, and has now returned to his first calling. He is currently the pastor of Hickory Grove Chapel on the west side of El Dorado. He is married to the former Shirley Harrell, a gospel singer.

The Broken Wings Mission Second Annual Fashion Show and Tribute to America will take place Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Willie Davis Jr., Recreation Center. The event will feature a meal, fashion show, testimonials, “Elvis”, Parris Plaisance, Through the Blood Band, door prizes and silent auction. Tickets $10.

Union Parish residents are encouraged to support their local domestic abuse and dating violence programs. Volunteers are needed. Union Parish TRIAD director Susan Edwards has announced that the re-certification deadline for Food for Families commodities this year has been set for Friday, Aug. 17 at noon. Those box recipients who have not already re-certified for 2012 should do so by the Aug. 17 deadline. Required are proof of income for 2012 and a photo I.D. Watermelon t-shirts available

The Farmerville Jaycees are gearing up for the 49th Annual Louisiana Watermelon Festival. The Jaycee Hall is now open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.
The Watermelon shirts are in. They are available in ice gray and royal blue.
Cost is $12 for youth sized and $15 for adult small- adult XL. Shirts are $17 for XXL and ###L. Tickets for both pageants will be going on sale soon. They are $10 per ticket.
Vendor and pageant applications are available at the Jaycee Hall and also can be found on the Jaycee’s website at www.lawatermelonfestival.com.

Pre-K Registration Set

Registration for the Pre-kindergarten program for children who will be four years of age before Oct.1 will be held May 23-24, 2012 at Farmerville Elementary School in Building C Pre-K wing from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The program will serve a limited number of children who are four years of age.
To be eligible to attend Pre-K the child must be developmentally mature to be separated from the parents for the full school day and be able to interact and demonstrate appropriate school behavior with children and adults. The child must also be potty trained.
The parent must complete all paperwork and provide the following; the child’s official birth certificate (hospital certificates are not acceptable), the child’s social security card, the child’s immunization record (current from the Health Unit), two proofs of income for the parent(s), $25.00 school fee (cash or money order), school supplies and uniforms for the child. School supply list and uniform requirements will be given to parents upon acceptance into the program.
