To prepare for custom-made iris implant surgery at Mayo Clinic, the patient undergoes an evaluation, special photography of both irises to create a match between the prosthesis and healthy iris, and examination of the eye. Once the plan is discussed, and a surgery is scheduled for about 2 to 3 months after the initial appointment, the photos of the eye are sent to Germany for the custom-made prosthesis.

Along with colleagues from NASA and the U.S. Navy, Michael Schubert and Matthew Stewart from Johns Hopkins Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery have developed a self-administered vestibular rehabilitation tool to see if following a protocol of certain head movements can help people recover more quickly. The team is testing the idea, which piggybacks off informal feedback NASA received from some astronauts returning from space, who reported better readjustment if they moved their head when re-entering gravity.

Recent research has shown that most, if not all, high grade serous ovarian cancers originate in the fallopian tubes. With no pronounced symptoms or tests to catch it early, ovarian cancer is usually detected in women with an average risk of cancer and in highly advanced stages. In this video, gynecologic oncologist, Rebecca Stone discusses the salpingectomy procedure, removal of the fallopian tubes, that is effective at preventing the most common form of ovarian cancer.
