The Bank of England has announced that future £5, £10, £20, and £50 banknotes could feature native wildlife instead of historical figures. The idea came from a public consultation where about 60% of people said they wanted nature as the theme for the next generation of British cash.
Now a panel of experts will create a shortlist of animals, birds, plants, and landscapes that could appear on the notes. Later this summer, the public will even get to vote on which species deserve a spot on the nation’s currency.
Don’t expect cats or dogs though, household pets are off the table. The focus will be on wild species native to the UK.
The final designs will be chosen by the Bank of England’s governor, and the new notes could take a few years before entering circulation.
