Week #5: Door Sneak Peek

Cajun Boil, Door County Style…

When you visit Door County, one of the events that everyone must participate in is the Fish Boil. It involves sitting around a fire at dusk, watching as the chef boils over the white fish, potatoes and onions, dousing the tall flames on the fire and then serves it up for dinner.

This week, I had some friends visiting and thought it was a perfect opportunity to try one out. However, instead of the fish boil, we opted for the “Cajun” boil at Kettle Black Restaurant in downtown Fish Creek.

The chef gave us the option to add lobster to the shrimp, dressed with their own proprietary blend of spices, then he performed a “ceremonial” boil over.

The final result was delicious; including potatoes, sweet potatoes, sausage, corn, brussel sprouts, mushrooms, celery and onion. Did I get a photo of that? No, of course not! I was too busy enjoying it with the homemade corn bread and salted butter. (You can find great images on the internet!).

FUN FACT: Door County fish boils date back to the late 1800s, brought to the peninsula by Scandinavian immigrants. The outdoor cooking method was an economical and efficient way to feed large groups of lumberjacks and fishermen.

Week #5: Cassidy's Journal

Starting over…

Lying in bed, I was staring at the off-white ceiling of my motorhome, not sure what to feel. Part of me wants to jump up and explore- to see this new place I’ve traveled to and take in the sights. The other part of me wants to pull the covers over my head and go back to sleep.

It’s exhaustion of a different kind. Deep in my bones.

I finally got up, because, well, coffee.

But, I’m still sitting here looking out at the mostly empty campground, and wondering what it means to be starting over...

Week #5: Author Update

Making it look easy…

A dear friend recently posted on social media that I make it “look easy!” And I thought, Oh, great! Because, behind the scenes it’s anything but!

I’m late with my email this week in part due to the semi-chaotic nature of trying to juggle multiple creative tracks and a day job at the same time…

I took this picture right before I cleared the board off, removing the completed items, in an attempt to make me feel better- but then I just added the same amount back! (All while editing the latest footage of Bill & I playing some great songs at a recent open mic).

I really can’t complain, because right now there are so many opportunities popping up, and so many events to join, and these are all things I’m thrilled about doing. Playing music, writing songs, attending friends’ gigs, going to book events, writing with other authors, seeing the sights, hanging with Dotty… it’s a full and exciting time!

You can do anything, but not everything…

Week #4: Door Sneak Peek

Cherries & Love, Oh My!

Door County is not just a popular destination for visitors each year during the “season” (May - October), but it’s also a desired destination for filmmakers due to the WI tax credits and incentives.

“A Cherry Pie Christmas”, released in 2025, is a fantastic way to take a peek into what life is like here as it was filmed entirely in Door County at real locations. Here’s a link so you can check out the movie, visit the locations, and plan your next trip on the movie trail!

Lautenbach’s Market and W**ery is one of the main locations for shooting the film, and for good reason...

Week #4: Cassidy's Journal

Song bits and pieces…

I’ve been humming this melody ever since I left the banks of the Tennessee River. It’s not a song I’ve heard before, so I’m pretty sure it’s something that my mind is writing subconsciously.

I started writing out some lyrics today… I never know whether a song’s meant to be finished or if it’s just a bit or piece that I tuck away in the back of my head for a future date.

I thought of you the other day
Time speeding by like a twist of fate
Dreamt you were standing at the shore
Train in the distance, I wanted more

The last line surfaced from that last overnight in Indiana… there was a train that passed by super close late at night and it made my heart sing.

I wondered who was on it…
