I've been following JC from WeatherNJ since Hurricane Sandy ๐ He's my go-to source for storm info. When he says something is a go, it's a go. So folks, time to buckle up and hunker down Sunday/Monday and possibly parts of Tuesday.
Begins: Late Saturday night (Oct 12) or early Sunday morning (Oct 13)
Peaks: Sunday through Monday (Oct 13โ14)
Ends: Tuesday (Oct 15), possibly early AM if it stalls
Where (New Jersey impact):
Most of NJ: Expect 0.5โ1 inch of rainfall total.
South & Central NJ (especially coastal regions โ Cape May, Ocean, Atlantic, Monmouth): Heavier 1โ3 inches possible.
Immediate Coast: Highest risk for coastal flooding and 25โ40 mph sustained winds (gusts up to 60 mph+).
Inland & Northern NJ: Cooler temps, lighter rain, but gusty conditions (20-30 mph).
๐ก Homeowner Storm Prep Checklist
1. Roof & Gutters
Clear gutters and downspouts before Saturday night to ensure proper drainage.
Inspect roof edges and flashing โ especially around chimneys, vents, and skylights.
Check for loose shingles or siding and secure anything that could be lifted by high winds.
Make sure gutter extensions and drains direct water away from your foundation.
2. Outdoor Items
Bring in or secure: patio furniture, umbrellas, planters, garbage cans, and decorations.
Tie down trampolines or lightweight structures.
If you have a deck with loose items, remove or anchor them.
3. Basement & Drainage
Test sump pump function (plug it in and pour water to ensure it activates).
Move valuables or electrical items off the basement floor.
If your property floods easily, consider sandbags or barriers for doorways and window wells.
4. Vehicles & Equipment
Park vehicles away from trees or low-lying flood zones.
Ensure generators are fueled and tested (keep them outside only for safety).
Check flashlights, batteries, and fuel for chainsaws or pumps.
5. Windows, Doors & Power
Close and lock all windows; seal any known drafts.
Charge phones, battery packs, and laptops ahead of Sunday.
Keep flashlights handy in multiple rooms.
Have candles or lanterns ready, but use caution with open flames.
6. Coastal & Low-Lying Areas
Expect prolonged onshore flow leading to flooding in back bays and estuaries.
If you live near the coast or tidal rivers, move vehicles to higher ground by Saturday night.
Avoid travel during high tide periods SundayโMonday.
Follow local alerts for coastal evacuation or flood warnings.
7. Comfort & Emergency Prep
Stock water, food, pet supplies, and medications for 2โ3 days.
Keep important documents in waterproof containers.
Make soup, charge devices, and plan for a โhunker-downโ day SundayโMonday.
๐งญ Key Takeaways
This storm brings needed rain, not extreme destruction, but coastal areas will see strong winds and flooding.
Wind & flooding, not tornadoes or thunderstorm-type events, are the main risks.
Inland NJ should expect steady rain and gusty winds, but manageable conditions overall.
Saturday is your final prep day โ use it to secure your property.
