"What's made the Flint music scene really special is anybody could do it, and everyone was encouraged to, there weren’t gatekeepers. It was really easy to just put yourself out there and perform at whatever skill level you were at. I remember being put on shows with these touring bands that were just so incredible and so beyond anything I thought I could do. And I was like, ‘How did I get this show?’ That kind of openness of opportunity (at Flint Local 432) really I think sparked a lot of creativity throughout the whole scene.”

The Headless band members are familiar faces in Flint's music scene, but their latest musical venture is new. They're excited that their first performance tonight will be at a familiar place on the Flint Local 432 stage, where they've been performing since they were teenagers.

Veterans of the Flint music scene since they were teenagers, The Headless turned to Flint Local 432 when the band decided to start a new project.

"If I’m living, let’s say, in Oakland County, it’s gonna take me 30 minutes to go this way or 30 minutes to go that way. We wanna make sure we have not only world-class entertainment (in Flint), but also try to educate people on how parking’s gonna be much easier. The food and restaurants are vibrant, and it’s a great city.”

A.I. use, or overuse, is everywhere: businesses, nonprofit organizations, media, government. What's resulting is a bunch of badly designed materials that do the exact opposite of what marketing and branding exists to do: make you stand out from the crowd.

Here's our case against A.I., a little background on why we don't use it at all for our publication, and why we hope that others relying on it reconsider.

"Community is such a huge part of what soccer is. It is arguably one of the largest worldwide communities there is. And that’s what we want people to feel. Sports fans or not, everyone of all ages can enjoy hanging out at the games, spending their summers together. I think we just really want people to see that part of it. And hopefully along the way, they grow to love the Bucks as much as we do.”

“I’m asking them to commit to one vegetable, herb, or plant, and then we’ll share them,” said Victoria Eaton, owner of Sweet Peaces in the Flint Farmers' Market. “I’m just trying to address the issues of potential food insecurity, and show that by cooperating people can meet those needs. I found that when I first started the idea, I was asking everybody to do a garden, and people don’t have time for that. That’s why I asked them to grow one thing (instead). It’s all person to person, I’m trying to create a means for people to connect without their phones a little bit.”

The city's social media posts featuring a new mascot have certainly generated conversation ... so I asked a few questions to get the lore -- where the idea came from, teaching kids about local government, why a fox was chosen, A.I. use, and where people can expect to see Flinny around town.

The city of Flint debuted a new mascot, and the animated version has drawn criticism for use of A.I.

“Flint means everything. It’s built who I am now, and it’s a big part of who I am and how I go about everyday life and not just basketball." - Flint native and Michigan Men's Basketball star Trey McKenney

McKenney was presented with a key to the city during a celebration of his basketball career in his hometown on May 14.

As a Flint native, second-year Mott Community College women's basketball coach Ryan Trevithick is intent on building a program that truly reflects what Flint basketball has always been known for: grittiness, toughness, and a strong work ethic.

Two of his incoming recruits, Davison's Ella Mangett and Lapeer's Maddie White, embody exactly what he wants Mott basketball to be known for.

“They’re determined, tenacious, and just 100% relentless,” Trevithick said. “It’s really cool to be able to have players that kind of embody what that Flint, blue collar, hardworking mentality is and both of them do.”

Entering his second season as coach, Mott Community College girls’ basketball coach Ryan Trevithick continues to prioritize toughness, versatility with recruits.

“Don’t underestimate the impact that you can have on these kinds of decisions. There’s a real potential for the citizens who get involved to kind of shape the direction of conversation. Passion is important, but you also need to know how to deploy that passion in a productive way at moments of decision-making.” - Joel Arnold of Strong Towns Flint

We share with the rest of the community in mourning the loss of Steve Tessmer, owner of Soggy Bottom. One of the most incredible things about that space is that under Tessmer's ownership, it truly became a place that reflected the unique characteristics of its staff members, regulars, and the many performers they brought in on their small stage.

I wanted to take a few moments to write about and share some of my personal experiences at Soggy, and why the place is so special to me, in the story below. I hope others will continue to think about and share their stories too. It is truly a special, magical, and iconic place in our city.

We share with the extended community in grieving the loss of Soggy Bottom owner Steve Tessmer.
