Little Richard bought half the songwriting rights from co-writer Albert Collins while Collins was serving time at Louisiana's Angola prison. McCartney sang lead, and he later described what it took to channel Little Richard's wild, hoarse scream: "you have to actually go outside yourself" to sing it. The Beatles had been performing this since their Quarrymen days between 1957 and 1962, having shared bills with Little Richard himself in 1962 - Lennon recalled the group watching him backstage in Hamburg, reading from the Bible between sets. They cut it twice for BBC radio in September 1963.
