πΈ Chains - The Beatles (1963, originally The Cookies 1962)
Written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, this had actually been recorded first by the Everly Brothers, who left their version unreleased - it took Little Eva's own backing group, the Cookies, to turn it into a modest hit in 1962. Harrison sang lead, marking the first time record buyers ever heard his voice on a commercial Beatles release, while Lennon played the harmonica intro. Recorded in four takes during the marathon 13-hour session that produced most of "Please Please Me," critic Ian MacDonald later dismissed the result as "slightly out-of-tune" and lacking spontaneity - though it remains one of the only Goffin-King songs the Beatles ever covered, from writers John and Paul openly admired.
