Questions Mount Over Who Engineered the Nasir Conflict
Fresh allegations and testimonies emerging from the ongoing “Machar Trial” continue to raise serious questions over the origins of the March 2025 Nasir conflict, with fingers increasingly pointing toward Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel, Hon. Michael Makuei Lueth, Martin Elia Lomuro, Gen. Chol Thon Balok, and Gen. Paul Nang.
According to testimonies and political observers, the conflict could have been avoided if the deployment of unified forces agreed upon under the Revitalized Peace Agreement (R-ARCSS) had been respected. Instead, reports indicate that non-unified tribal militia forces were allegedly deployed into Nasir, escalating tensions on the ground.
Sources claim opposition leaders who attempted to calm the situation and engage local communities were instead targeted. Hon. Gatwech Lam Puoch was reportedly arrested after publicly appealing to authorities, saying:
“Please stop deploying troops that aren’t unified forces and allow us to engage our people on the ground.”
Analysts now argue that this statement alone demonstrated there were internal concerns over the nature of the forces being sent to Nasir.
Adding more controversy, last week the newly appointed CDF, Gen. Santino Deng Wol, reportedly urged the same forces deployed in Nasir to prepare for integration into the SSPDF — a statement many interpreted as confirmation that those troops had not previously been integrated as required under the peace agreement.
Critics say this development strengthens accusations that the deployment violated the R-ARCSS and contributed directly to the outbreak of violence in Nasir.
The allegations remain politically sensitive, and no court ruling has yet determined criminal responsibility regarding the Nasir conflict.
