Our Student Spotlight this week is Senior Tanner Boyle!

Tanner studies General Media and Photography here at Pacific where he does a lot of event coverage. Tanner has done photography for several departments in the University including: Athletics, Marketing and Communications and the student newspaper "The Index" as well as additional freelance work through MAPS. In addition to his photography jobs he works in the Media Department's Equipment room and helps manage the university's darkroom.

Tanner loves photographing subjects one-on-one, which is evident in his photo essay about a local 24hr vet clinic. The images and the accompanying documentary make up Tanner's senior Project which he will present next week on Senior Projects Day and screen in May.

At MAPS it's important for us to support our student workers and their creative endeavours. This week's student spotlight is a student who's starting her senior project, and we're excited to cheer her on!

Alyssa Pinter is a transfer student who came to Pacific a year ago and will be graduating in December. Alyssa is majoring in media arts with a focus in film, and she’s also completing a sociology minor. Her long time passion for photography led her to take an interest in film, particularly in the documentary genre. She has done photography and film work for MAPS, including the production of a promotional video for MAPS. This Summer she will be traveling to Australia (where she was born) to film a documentary about her dad’s suicide and her family’s traumatic past.

To learn more about Alyssa’s Senior Project you can check out her Indiegogo campaign page!

We recently got to catch up with Iris Young, a Pacific Alumni who worked for MAPS before graduating in 2016 with degrees in Film and Music.

Since graduating Iris has worked for the Northwest Film Center in Portland as a teaching assistant, Summer camp Coordinator and box office Manager for PIFF (The Portland International Film Festival). She continues to take on freelance work and recently completed a short documentary.

Iris had this to say about MAPS:

"MAPS gave me a chance to practice leading projects and working with clients. An important part of that was learning to keep the work within a set number of hours. On school projects and personal projects you just work on it until it is the best it can be. When you have a client that's paying you for the hours you spend, you have to be more careful how you manage those hours, what you prioritize, and what things are ok to let go. Working with MAPS helped me think about the business side of video production and combine that with the more creative side I was learning in my classes."

Checkout Iris's latest project "The Rock Dojo" a documentary short about a group of children learning guitar for the first time.

One of our Seniors this year, this week's Student Spotlight is a student who loves to dive into media projects in, and outside of the classroom!

Portland Native Aaron McAdam is in his fourth and final year at Pacific University and will graduate in May. During his time here he has been involved in the Theatre department building sets and working as a stagehand, experience that is put to good use in his Capstone film "Do you Believe in Magic?". Aaron's favorite role to be on set is the audio recordist, along with his passion for post-production as an editor. Working in the film program at Pacific has given Aaron the knowledge to work on MAPS Projects as well as personal projects, like a podcast that he is in the process of creating with a few friends.

Aaron's senior film will be screened with several other senior productions at the end of term, so watch out for the upcoming posters!

Our first Student Spotlight of 2018 is Taylor Hampton, checkout her bio below, and as always, you can contact Rebecca Allen at [email protected] for more information about having MAPS make your promotional materials, or cover your event!

Taylor Hampton is a freshman at Pacific University who intends to double major in International Studies and Film. Last fall she started working with MAPS by shadowing an Admissions project being done by MAPS with the help of some Alumni. In her Video for Community Engagement class Taylor made videos for the Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center, which helped her gain valuable experience working with clients. She's excited to be working more for MAPS this semester, and to becoming a well-rounded filmmaker during her time here at Pacific. Before coming to Pacific Taylor lived in Klamath Falls Oregon which gave her a love of the outdoors, while the nearby Shakespeare festival got her interested in theatre.

With only six days left until Thanksgiving everyone at MAPS is looking forward to some well-deserved rest as we wrap up projects before the Holidays - and start a few new ones!

One of our Senior producers who's been eager to jump in on new projects is Addison Woodside. Addison is a local who grew up in Portland Oregon, and will finish her degree in film & video this May. Along the way she's completed many short films with her peers, and worked on several projects for MAPS. So far, her favorite MAPS project has been an audiology tutorial for Pacific University’s College of Health Professions. Her favorite things to do in film are write and direct, which she's gotten the opportunity to do with her narrative capstone film "We’re [Not] Making a Movie". In addition to pursuing her passions, her time here at Pacific has allowed her to try different roles in the filmmaking process and gain experience that has given her the confidence to take on any position that's put in front of her.
