Never forget where you started

I still remember the first time I saw this scene.

Back in the 90s, there was a Saturday morning video game show in Mexico called Nintendo Manía, and if I remember correctly, they showed a short clip from the Japanese version of Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie.

I had already been watching anime for years by then, so anime itself wasn't anything new to me. But seeing Street Fighter like THIS?

Holy crap.

Guile and Bison going at it, the Japanese voices, the animation, the music, Bison using his Psycho Power... the whole thing just looked and sounded incredible.

And this was the 90s. I couldn't just look it up and immediately watch the movie. All I had was that short glimpse, and it was enough to make me think, "I HAVE to see this."

Almost 30 years later, I still love this movie.

Who else remembers the first time they saw Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie?

This is a Shogakukan activity book from the 90s, and Shogakukan isn't a toy company, it's the actual publisher behind Doraemon and Case Closed. Nintendo handing its biggest mascot off to a real manga publishing house for kids' books says a lot about how seriously the merchandising machine took every corner of the market, not just games.

Multiple publishers passed on funding Bayonetta 2 after Sega ran into money trouble and backed out of the project. Nintendo picked it up, fully funded it, and made it Wii U exclusive as a result. The game's own producer has said flat out it wouldn't exist without that.

Manual and reference art like this used to be doing way more work than people realize. Early Zelda sprites on NES and even SNES could only tell you so much about what Link actually looked like, so Nintendo's illustrators had real room to interpret him beyond the in-game pixels, and that's why his proportions and face shift so much between pieces even within the same era. That gap between "what the hardware could show you" and "what the artwork could show you" is basically why instruction manuals from this period turned into their own little art form instead of just being a rules booklet.

It was cool that Nintendo re-did the LTTP artwork when the game came out on GBA too.
