Early Morning Head-On Fatal Crash In Larimer County

Highway 287 near W. County Road 54E

(LA PORTE, COLO) - On January 24, 2025, at approximately 4:40 a.m., the Colorado State Patrol responded to a crash involving a Freightliner semi hauling a trailer and a Toyota Corolla on southbound Highway 287 near West County Road 54E (milepost 355) in Larimer County.

Preliminary investigation indicates the semi was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes when it collided head-on with the northbound Toyota. Both vehicles caught fire as a result of the crash. The driver of the Toyota was extricated from the vehicle, and an adult passenger in that same vehicle was trapped inside.

The 20-year-old female driver of the Toyota was transported to a local area hospital with serious injuries. The 21-year-old male passenger of the Toyota was pronounced dead on scene. The identity of the deceased will be released by the Larimer County Coroner after next of kin notifications.

The driver of the semi, David Perez Carillo, a 24-year-old male from New York, was arrested and charged with the following:

Vehicular Homicide-Reckless
Vehicular Assault-Reckless
Driving Vehicle on Wrong Side of a Divided Highway
The Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit is the lead investigating agency. The exact cause of the crash is still yet to be determined.

Highway 287 roadway was closed for approximately 7 hours and 30 minutes.

Arrests and charges are merely accusations until and unless a suspect is convicted of a crime. All suspects and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

Fort Collins, CO - October 18, 2025 - No Kings Rally at Civic Center Park

In the first photo with the eagle, two men were spotted keeping watch on the roof of the building across Laporte Avenue from the park. Zoom in to see they are wearing face masks, hats, and tactical vests with no visible agency markings.

Besides Bad Bunny, other celebrities came to the rally, including US Representative Joe Neguse, CO Secretary of State Jenna Griswold, Larimer County Commissioner Kristin Stephens, and Larimer County DA Gordon McLaughlin.

The crowd was massive, but very calm. The marchers filled the southbound lanes of Mason Street while also filling the northbound lanes of College Avenue.

The march went from Civic Center Park to Mason Street, to Mulberry, to College, and then back to the park, a distance of a little over one mile. Marchers chanted, and waved at other protesters sitting and standing along the route. According to the Coloradoan, the marchers filled the entire loop at one point.

Colorado Communities Stand United for Democracy and Against Authoritarianism.

Front Range, Northern CO — IndivisibleNOCO, the League of Women Voters of Larimer County, the American Association of University Professors, and others are proud to announce they’re hosting a rally and march, joining in the nationwide “No Kings II Day” protests, on Saturday, October 18. Residents from Fort Collins, Windsor, Greeley, Loveland, Berthoud, and Longmont will come together to rally for democracy and reject authoritarian rule. This event, No Kings II, follows June’s remarkable No Kings I event, where over 10,000 people in Fort Collins—and thousands more across Northern Colorado—joined forces to oppose dictatorship, facism, and defend democratic values. The message for October is clear: Our work is not done. We will not be silent. Let’s unite again, even bigger and louder.

“No Kings II” is a peaceful, national day of action and mass mobilization in response to growing authoritarianism and corruption within the Trump administration. Protesters will call attention to issues such as targeting immigrant families, profiling and detaining individuals without warrants, threats to electoral integrity, cuts to essential services like health care and education, voter suppression, disregard for gun violence, and policies that benefit billionaires at the expense of typical families. Over 2,500 rallies are planned nationwide, with more than 60 scheduled in Colorado alone.

“President Trump is abusing executive power and undermining the system of checks and balances fundamental to our democracy,” said a spokesperson for IndivisibleNOCO. “We refuse to stand by as these abuses continue. Instead, we will peacefully demonstrate our collective commitment to democracy, accountability, and organized, nonviolent resistance.”

Colorado State Troopers Heading to HWY 287 for DUI Enforcement

Weekend surge enforcement

(Denver, CO) – The Colorado State Patrol Front Range DUI Task Force is partnering with the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office and the Wyoming Highway Patrol to conduct increased patrols along Highway 287 on Saturday, October 25, 2025. This operation is focused on deterring impaired driving from Ft Collins to the Wyoming border, including other major traffic arteries and feeder roads. This increased CSP presence coincides with the annual Border War rivalry game, hosted in Wyoming this year.

While impaired driving will be the focus, any dangerous driving behavior observed or reported will be addressed.

According to Colorado State Patrol data, troopers have investigated 12 crashes on northern Hwy 287 (Adams, Broomfield, Boulder and Larimer Counties) that resulted from an impaired driver from January 1, 2025, through September 18, 2025. The majority of the impaired driving crashes occurred on Saturday and Sunday. Other top crash causal factors in this same time period include lane violations, distracted driving, failing to yield and following too closely.

This special operation aims to stop impaired driving "in its tracks" to save lives. State troopers will focus on the detection and apprehension of drivers who may be impaired by or otherwise under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or a combination of these substances. So, don’t take a break from driving responsibly. Always make a plan for a sober ride.
We are asking the public for assistance in reporting suspected impaired drivers. The driver should be avoided by getting out of the way. Then, contact the Colorado State Patrol after you pull over by calling *CSP (*277), 9-1-1, or 970-249-4392. Be prepared to provide the following information: vehicle description, license plate number, location and direction of travel, driver description, and the driving behavior being demonstrated. All emergency calls can be made to 9-1-1.

CBI Conducting Case Review into Death of Hunter S. Thompson

September 30, 2025 – CBI – Woody Creek, CO – The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is currently conducting a case review into the death of renowned journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson, at the suggestion of the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office following a request from his widow, Anita Thompson. The review is being conducted to provide an independent perspective on the 2005 investigation.

Hunter S. Thompson, 67, died on February 20, 2005, at his home in Woody Creek, Colorado, from an alleged self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The original investigation concluded the death was a su***de.

Sheriff Michael Buglione stated that while there is no new evidence suggesting foul play, the Sheriff's Office is committed to answering any lingering questions surrounding the case. “We understand the profound impact Hunter S. Thompson had on this community and beyond,” said Sheriff Buglione. “By bringing in an outside agency for a fresh look, we hope to provide a definitive and transparent review that may offer peace of mind to his family and the public.”

The review process is expected to take an unspecified amount of time, and there is no firm deadline for its completion. Further updates will be provided once the review is finished

From the Secretary of State re Filling Vacancy in State House of Reps

Colorado House District 14 Vacancy Nomination Paperwork Found to Be Deficient, Rejected

Denver, CO – The Department of State has rejected nominating paperwork from the vacancy committee for Colorado House District 14.

On Monday, September 15, 2025, House Minority Leader Rose Pugliese (R) resigned from her seat in the legislature with immediate effect. Under Colorado law (C.R.S. 1-12-203(2)), a vacancy committee may not select anyone to fill a vacancy without mailing a written notice of the vacancy committee meeting to committee members at least 10 days prior to the scheduled meeting. The vacancy committee for this seat notified committee members on September 15, 2025, and met and nominated a candidate on Monday, September 22, 2025 — fewer than 10 days following the resignation of the former House Minority Leader — and thus failed to comply with the law.

On September 24, 2025, the Department of State received nominating paperwork that included dates that show non-compliance with Colorado law.

Because this nominating process did not follow timelines established in statute, the paperwork has been deemed insufficient. The pertinent vacancy committee may resubmit nominating paperwork after following the proper procedures laid out in Colorado law.
