🚨WARNING! Audio Nerd Talk Alert!🚨
The DIFFERENCE between Mixing in the DAW, and Mixing in the Club 🤘🏼🤘🏼
What’s up y’all! I just wanted to drop in and relive myself of some mental baggage as I start REALLY diving in to what all can be done in a Live Mix, Vs what can be done AFTER the fact in the DAW. I’ve found THREE Major differences, and I’ll list them below, but I also what to stress how crazy powerful the two methods can be, when used in conjunction for long term projects.
The three major differences between Live Mixing and DAW Mixing are:
-Time: This is HUGE. Most of the time, you hardly have any time to set up and sound check at ALL. Once you do, you have even less time to shape and MOST of the time you’re still finalizing your mix on the first couple of songs. EsPECIALLY if you work at a production house as a House Audio Engineer. Conversely, in the DAW, you might not have “all the time in the world,” but you have considerably more time to complete a mix.
-Plugins: When Mixing Live, on MOST common consoles found either at a house FOH Mix Position OR on the road, you won’t necessarily be able to stack plugins (or inserts) on a track like you would in the DAW to fix issues. This means a few things. This means that you need to know your s**t when it comes to EQ, Gate and Comp. It also means that you need to learn how to send to FX Modules and then RETURN that signal to the output source. It can be a bit more tedious than just “throwing on a plugin.” Conversely to THIS, when you combine X amount of time mixing live with X amount of time mixing in the DAW, your daw mixes will get a lot cleaner because of the NEED for clean assets in your live mixes. 🤘🏼🤘🏼
-Perfection: In the DAW, you may actually have TOO much time. And you may even strive for TOO clean of assets. Over eq’ing can lead to dead sounding audio files, and over LISTENING can lead to over eq’ing. Find a balance between the two. It’s much easier when the pressure is on to shape your sounds and let em fly simply because of 1. The amount of time you have and 2. FEELING the physical room and vibe of the room.
While there are many more differences, those three have been on the brain!
