Before today's advanced welding technology, automation, and industry certifications, there was a vision to bring knowledge, standards, and professionalism to the welding industry.

Founded in 1919, the American Welding Society (AWS) has played a major role in shaping the industry we know today.

From developing welding codes and standards to supporting education, certification, and the next generation of skilled tradespeople, AWS has been part of our industry's evolution for over a century.

And the work continues!

Over 100 years of advancing welding, and we're still just getting started.

We opened up Harris.

We opened up Airco.

Now we're finishing the series with VICTOR.

This time, we're looking inside the traditional Victor-style tube-mix design and its familiar cutting-tip interface.

Three torch families. Three different engineering approaches. Same basic job.

And more than 100 years later, we're STILL arguing about which one is better. šŸ˜‚

So now that you've seen all threeā€¦

A quick note about this 3-part series:

This series is strictly educational. The goal is not to say that Harris, Airco, Victorā€”or any particular torch styleā€”is better than another. Each design has its own history, engineering approach, applications, and loyal users.

Iā€™m simply opening them up and showing the differences in how these three traditional torch styles are designed, where the gases mix, and how their tip systems differ.

No rankings. No winners. Just learning a little more about the equipment we use every day.

Harris mixes in the headā€¦

Airco said, ā€œNah, keep going.ā€ šŸ˜‚

In Part 2, we cut open the traditional Airco-style system and follow those gases all the way to the TIP.

And once you understand what that 144-style tip is actually doing, you'll never look at that little piece of copper the same way again.

Weā€™re starting with the oldest of the three equipment families in this series and cutting it open to see whatā€™s actually happening inside.

šŸŽ™ļø TORCHTALES ā€” FULL CONVERSATION #99 drops Saturday 10/3/26 "Last thing you think about"

What exactly is an ERP system? And what does TIMS actually do for a welding and gas distributor?

For Conversation #99, we went straight to Billings, Montana, for a sit-down with David Schaer, President of Computers Unlimited , the company behind TIMS Software, who invited me to their 2026 annual users conference.

I was SO impressed to see over 130 distributors in this conference which has been running for 48 years.

But this story actually starts a generation earlier.

Davidā€™s father, Dr. Michael ā€œMikeā€ Schaer, founded Computers Unlimited in Billings in 1978. What began as a Montana software company would eventually develop technology specifically around the needs of industrial gas and welding distributors. Decades later, the reins passed from father to son when David became president in 2009.

But Davidā€™s path wasnā€™t simply, ā€œDad owns the companyā€¦ here are the keys.ā€

His father wanted him to understand the business from the customerā€™s side, so David spent time working inside a welding distributor and learning firsthand what happens behind the counter and behind the scenes.

That experience gave him a completely different perspective when he eventually took the reins at Computers Unlimited.

We talked about Davidā€™s beginnings, learning the industry from the ground up, following his fatherā€™s entrepreneurial legacy, and something almost everyone in our industry has heard about but may not completely understand:

What exactly is an ERP system?

Inventory. Cylinders. Orders. Customers. Accounting. Operations. Data. All those moving pieces that somehow have to communicate with each other every single day.

A great conversation about family, business, technology, and the systems working behind the scenes of the welding and gas industry.

What a great time we had last night at Fenway Park!

A Red Sox game, a great group of people from the welding industry, plenty of laughs, and just an all-around great night in Boston.

With everything going on during the GAWDA Annual Convention, it was nice to spend an evening together, enjoy the game, have some fun, and just enjoy each otherā€™s company.

Great people, great conversations, and definitely some great memories made along the way.

What a night! āš¾ļø
