In November, we admitted this adult Bald Eagle (22-5259) who was found in Fort Myers unable to fly. Based on the birdโs condition and due to severely low red blood cell counts (anemia), veterinarians suspected the eagle was suffering from rodenticide poisoning. Despite IV fluids, medication, and supportive care, the eagle passed away overnight. At the request of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the eagleโs remains were sent to University of Georgia for necropsy and toxicology testing in collaboration with the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study (SCWDS).
Over the weekend, we received the heartbreaking test results confirming what our veterinarians already believed to be true- high levels of anticoagulant rodenticide (brodifacoum) killed this eagle. These deaths are 100% PREVENTABLE! Currently, eaglets and other young raptors are beginning to hatch so we must do our part to ensure a healthy, eco-friendly environment for all! Please DO NOT use rat poison! Encourage others to find alternative ways to deter unwanted animals from their structures like installing an owl box in the backyard or placing peppermint oil soaked cotton-balls in problem areas!
