Get your costumes ready, grab some goodies for our furry friends, and join the Halloween fun! Cape Coral Animal Shelter & Veterinary Clinic is excited to announce the return of its annual “Trick or Treat for the Shelter Animals” event on Friday, October 30, and Saturday, October 31, from 12 p.m. to 4p.m. each day.

This fun-filled Halloween tradition invites children, families, and Halloween-spirited adults of all ages to dress up in their favorite costumes and visit the shelter for a special kind of trick-or-treating—one where the animals get treats, too! Visitors are encouraged to bring dog and cat treats to share with our furry residents.

Special Halloween treat buckets will be placed outside the kennels and cat rooms so trick-or-treaters can leave a little something for the animals waiting for their forever homes. And because Halloween treats shouldn't be just for the four-legged crowd, we'll have plenty of goodies for our human trick-or-treaters, too!

“This is one of our favorite events of the year,” said Liz McCauley, Executive Director of Cape Coral Animal Shelter. “There is something so special about seeing children and adults dressed in their Halloween costumes, bringing treats to animals who are still waiting for families of their own. Our dogs and cats may not understand Halloween, but they certainly appreciate the love and attention! And, of course, we want our human visitors to leave with a few treats of their own. It& #39;s a wonderful way to bring our community together and share a little kindness with the animals.”

The shelter will be decked out in Halloween decorations, with staff and some of our furry residents joining in the spooky fun. Visitors will also have the opportunity to meet adoptable dogs and cats, learn more about the shelter's lifesaving work, and perhaps even find a new best friend! Whether you're a tiny trick-or-treater, a
grown-up who never outgrew Halloween, or simply an animal lover looking to spread some joy, everyone is welcome!

No registration is required. Just put on your costume, bring some treats for the dogs and cats, and come enjoy a Halloween celebration that's all about giving—and getting—a little love!

Orphaned Skunk Kit Gets a Second Chance at CROW

The Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) is caring for a skunk kit found in Cape Coral after its mother was struck and killed by a vehicle. Admitted Sept. 28, the orphaned skunk was moderately dehydrated but otherwise healthy. It is CROW’s first skunk patient admission since 2022.

The young patient is making progress under CROW’s care. Initially bottle-fed, the skunk kit is now in the process of weaning. The rehabilitation team will continue monitoring its growth and development until it can survive independently and be released into the wild.

Skunks are uncommon patients at CROW, with just 39 admissions since 2012, including both striped and Eastern spotted skunks.

Striped skunks are native to Florida and occur throughout most of the state, except the Florida Keys. Primarily nocturnal, they inhabit a variety of environments, including forests, fields, wetlands, and residential neighborhoods.

CROW encourages drivers to remain alert, follow posted speed limits and use extra caution around dawn and dusk to help prevent wildlife-vehicle collisions. For questions about injured or potentially orphaned wildlife, call CROW’s hospital at 239-322-5068.

JUST IN—Sabatini Law Firm P.A., today filed a lawsuit against the City of Cape Coral on behalf of resident and mayoral candidate Lisa Cohen-Adkinson, challenging the legality of proposed special assessments associated with the North 3 Utilities Expansion Project.

Filed in the Circuit Court of the Twentieth Judicial Circuit in Lee County, the complaint states that the City’s proposed assessment structure would impose approximately $330 million in financial obligations on affected property owners without adequately demonstrating that the charges are fairly allocated according to the special benefits each property receives.

Proposed assessments are approximately $35,264 per equivalent parcel east of Burnt Store Road and $41,029 west of Burnt Store Road, excluding additional connection expenses, financing charges, and other costs. The City is improperly shifting costs for improvements benefiting the broader public onto a limited group of property owners.

The lawsuit demands a review of the assessment methodology, a declaration that any assessments that fail to satisfy Florida’s requirements for special benefit and fair apportionment are unlawful, and a prohibition on enforcement of assessments determined to violate the law.

Cohen-Adkinson brings the action in her individual capacity as a Cape Coral resident and property owner.
