Some days on tour remind us why Alaska is unlike anywhere else.

We spent a day aboard the iconic Discovery III, cruising the Chena River while learning about the people, history, and traditions that shaped Alaskaā€™s interior.

Along the way we met sled dogs, watched reindeer up close, learned about Athabascan culture, and stepped back into a way of life that still thrives today.

One of our favorite parts of leading these tours isnā€™t just seeing Alaska ourselvesā€”itā€™s watching our guests experience moments like these for the very first time.

Itā€™s hard to fit a day like this into ten photosā€¦ but hereā€™s our best attempt.

Everyone wants to find goldā€¦

ā€¦until they discover how much work it takes. šŸ˜„

One of our favorite stops near Fairbanks is Gold Dredge 8, where Alaskaā€™s gold rush comes to life.

Our travelers climb aboard a narrow-gauge train, step back into the days when massive dredges worked around the clock, and hear the stories of the men and women who chased their dreams north.

Then comes everyoneā€™s favorite partā€¦

Picking up a gold pan for the very first time.

A little patience. A little technique. A few hopeful swirlsā€¦

And before long, tiny flakes of real Alaskan gold begin to appear.

Every guest leaves with their own vial of gold.

But what they really take home is a deeper appreciation for the grit, determination, and perseverance that helped shape Alaska.

Some experiences arenā€™t about checking another stop off the itinerary.

Theyā€™re about stepping into history.

Which came firstā€¦ the Chicken or the Order? šŸ”

A lot of people have asked us where The Order of the Chicken came from.

The answer isā€¦ we created it.

After our first Alaska tour, Anne and I were talking about our stop in Chicken, Alaska. It was already one of everyoneā€™s favorite places on the tour, but we wanted our guests to leave with something more than just another photo stop.

So we started dreaming.

What if there was a ceremony?

What if everyone took an oath?

What if every traveler received an official certificate?

And, of courseā€¦

What if everyone got a rubber chicken? šŸ”

Some of our best ideas start with someone saying, ā€œThis is either going to be really funā€¦ or really dumb.ā€

Fortunately, this one turned out to be really fun.

Now, every group that reaches Chicken becomes part of the flock, and watching people laugh, cheer for one another, and proudly carry around a rubber chicken has become one of our favorite Alaska traditions.

Sometimes the best memories arenā€™t the ones you find on a map.

Theyā€™re the ones you create.

Every Alaska journey with us has one tradition that our guests quickly learn aboutā€¦

The Order of the Chicken. šŸ”

It all happens in Chicken, Alaska.

After traveling thousands of miles together, our travelers gather at the end of the day to share a meal and to raise their right hands, take the oath, receive their official certificates, and proudly accept the newest symbol of their adventureā€”a rubber chicken.

It may look a little sillyā€¦

But thatā€™s exactly the point.

Somewhere between the laughter, the oath, and a pavilion full of raised rubber chickens, a group of travelers becomes something more.

They become part of the flock.

And once youā€™re part of the flock, youā€™ll always have the Guardians of the Flock watching your six.

From Dawson City to Chicken, Alaska.

Some travel days are just travel days.

This day was not one of them.

We started by boarding the George Black Ferry and crossing the mighty Yukon River outside Dawson City. From there, our caravan climbed onto the legendary Top of the World Highway ā€” a winding gravel road that lives up to its name with mile after mile of incredible views stretching across the Yukon wilderness.

The weather changed by the minute. The road was dusty in places, muddy in others, and every turn seemed to reveal another unforgettable vista.

Then came the moment everyone had been waiting forā€¦

Alaska!

After weeks of planning and thousands of miles on the road, we crossed the border and officially entered the Last Frontier.

By evening, our group rolled into the famous little town of Chicken, Alaska, where adventure, laughter, and a few questionable life choices await. šŸ˜†šŸ”

These are the days that remind us why we travel.

The destination is amazingā€¦

But the journey is the reward.

From Mile 0 to Dawson City

Nearly a week ago we stood at Mile 0 in Dawson Creek wondering what the road ahead would bring.

Since then weā€™ve traveled more than 1,200 miles up the Alaska Highway, crossed into the Yukon, visited the legendary Sign Post Forest in Watson Lake, explored some of the most beautiful scenery in North America, and shared every mile with 48 incredible travelers chasing the same dream.

There have been long travel days, changing weather, endless mountain views, and more stories than we can count.

Today weā€™ll be leaving Dawson City and heading for the Top of the World Highway.

Tomorrowā€¦ Alaska.

But before we turn the page to the next chapter, here are a few moments from the first stretch of this unforgettable journey.

On our journey north, many of our guests did something they had never done beforeā€¦

They walked on a glacier.

We boarded the giant Ice Explorers, climbed out onto the Athabasca Glacier, and spent the afternoon standing on ice that has been forming for centuries.

Some explored the meltwater streams.
Some took photos.
Some simply stood still and soaked it all in.

One of our favorite parts of leading these tours is watching people experience a true ā€œfirst.ā€ It is truly something special.

Because no matter how many miles youā€™ve traveled, there are still moments that leave you sayingā€¦

So naturally we brought a box back to the RV.

A few minutes later, we turned around and found Scottie sitting ON the kitchen counter next to the box like this was completely normal behavior. šŸ˜‚

Did he eat one?
No.

Was he seriously considering a life of crime?
Absolutely.

Rain, clouds, and snow-covered peaks.

Not exactly the postcard weather most people imagine when they think of Banff.

And yet, it was absolutely beautiful in its own way.

Our group spent the day exploring some of the most iconic scenery in the Canadian Rockies, including the breathtaking views at Moraine Lake. The weather may have been cool and damp, but the mountains, glaciers, and turquoise water were every bit as spectacular as we imagined.

One of our favorite parts of the day wasnā€™t the scenery itselfā€”it was watching everyone experience it together. Cameras came out, conversations stopped, and for a few moments the mountains did all the talking.

Thatā€™s one of the things we love most about traveling. The destinations are incredible, but the memories are made with the people standing beside you.

And of course, no day in the Rockies would be complete without a bear encounterā€¦ even if this one was a little friendlier than most.
