Dekalb County Daily News

Dekalb County Daily News WFPA 1400 AM was first put on the air in 1949 by Robert Johnson. Like most local 1,000 watt AM stations it struggled in recent years.

Dekalb County Community Broadcasting was proud to own it in the early 2000's. We're getting the band back together.

๐ŸŒง๏ธ Weekend Outlook & Thanksgiving Weather Update ๐Ÿฆƒ

We have a mixed bag coming up for the weekend, followed by the widespread soaking weโ€™ve been waiting for just in time for holiday travel. Here is the breakdown of what to expect:

โšก Friday & Saturday

Friday Afternoon: Expect showers and some spotty, heavy thunderstorms to develop.

The Threats: We aren't expecting widespread severe weather, but don't be surprised if a few storms kick up the wind, drop some small hail, and produce lightning.

Timing: Because these are scattered, there isn't a specific start/stop time. Expect a gradual start and a slow finish to the rain chances.

Saturday: Some lingering showers are possible. If you are south of Demopolis, Selma, Montgomery, and Auburn, you might see a few heavier storms in the afternoon.

๐Ÿš— Next Week: The Big Soak

The rain we need is finally arriving. Several waves of rain will move across the South from Monday through Wednesday.

Beneficial Rain: This will be a generous wet spell for dry areas. Most of North and Central Alabama can expect 1โ€“2 inches of rain.

Travel Impact: The heaviest rain is targeting Tuesday into Wednesday, which coincides with pre-holiday travel. Please plan accordingly!

Thanksgiving Day: A strong cold front is set to pass through on the holiday itself.

โš ๏ธ A Note on Severe Weather

Right now, the severe risk for next week remains low. However, November systems can be tricky and hide "sneaky threats" that only reveal themselves shortly before arrival. We aren't concerned right now, but we are vigilantโ€”you never turn your back on a storm system this time of year.

The Bottom Line: Prepare for a wet start to the holiday week, especially Tuesday and Wednesday, before the cold front sweeps in for Thanksgiving.

Widespread dense fog has developed and is expected to continue until 8 AM across much of northern Alabama. Visibilities will drop at times to 1/4 of a mile or less. Allow extra time if traveling and extra distance between yourselves and others on the road.

FINALLY! Some good news in the rain department! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

The newest drought monitor shows conditions here in Alabama are getting worse. Itโ€™s been 32 days since Birmingham measured an inch or more of rain, and it will be nearly 38 days by the time the main event arrives next week. We desperately need a big soaking, and it's on the way.

Here is a breakdown of expectations and timing for the incoming rain waves:

ROUND 1: FRIDAY & SATURDAY

๐Ÿ’ง Thursday Evening: Some initial showers begin to creep in, mainly north of Hamilton, Cullman, and Gadsden into the Tennessee Valley.

โ˜” Friday (Best Bet): This is the best shot at rain for this first round, lasting through the day into the early evening.

โ˜๏ธ Saturday: Don't cancel anything, but some leftover, low-impact showers may hang around.

ROUND 2: THE PAYOFF (Next Week!)

๐ŸŽ‰ Leading into Thanksgiving: This is the soaking we've been waiting for!

โ›ˆ๏ธ Monday - Wednesday: Several waves of rain and some thunderstorms will rumble across the South.

๐ŸŽฏ Alabama Timing: The bulk of this significant rainfall for Alabama is targeting Tuesday and Wednesday before the holiday.

โš ๏ธ A NOTE ON SEVERE WEATHER

Right now, the risk remains LOW.

However, we are watching next weekโ€™s system very closely. Sometimes "sneaky threats" don't materialize until a day or twoโ€”or even just a few hoursโ€”before the event. We aren't worried, but we are always vigilant. Never turn your back on a storm system in November or December!
