Jacob is very leery about bringing anyone else into TechBeat. If you're worth something and he can't give you what you're worth, he doesn't want to waste your time.

Sometimes that currency is his business working for yours and the two of you helping each other out. If he can't offer that either, he'd rather not ask.

He wants to hire people. Since that first company he has worked with a few, and every time he waited until he was ready to pay them.

A lot of founders hand out a percentage of the company instead. Jacob says that takes a certain buy in. The other person has to be as excited about growing it as you are, because it's their business now too. The friends he worked with back then never felt that way. They still felt like employees, but they just weren't paid.

Jacob walked in with sixteen websites. Reggie asked what he'd keep if he could only keep one thing, and Jacob sat quiet for a couple of minutes. What would you keep?

Jacob says he should have offered three sites at $600 and charged $1,000 for every site after that. He locked in the low price with no end date instead. What would your intro offer look like with an expiration on it?

Before his first client, Jacob Putnam built TechBeat's systems twice on his own dime. What would you build differently if a big customer showed up next month?

The part that hurt Jacob most was that he got other people involved. He made a bad choice and it cost his friends their time.

These were work friends, and they were still friends. He started with one on one conversations with the people who weren't expecting it. Some of them already saw the writing on the wall.

Then came the big one. Everyone came over, sat down at a table, and talked through how to dissolve the business. Jacob told them he knew he had overpromised and knew he had worn them out.

They're still friends today. He says he could call any of them right now and it would be like nothing ever happened.
