Sennebogen Material Handlers Mark Milestones in Growth | CEG

For four generations, the Weinstein family has been steadily expanding its capabilities to provide recycling services to the lower mainland of British Columbia. Founded by Isadore Weinstein in 1952, Allied Salvage Metals has evolved through several changes in location and equipment. Today, with facilities operating in the cities of Richmond and Squamish, Isadore's great-grandson Ian sees his growing fleet of Sennebogen material handlers as an important turning point in that history.

Flatiron Construction Ahead of Schedule for I-710 Project

Rehabilitation

The project consists of rehabilitating a portion of the highway (five lanes in each direction) with joint plain concrete pavement, (JPCP), and continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP). All northbound lanes between Bandini Boulvard and the I-5/I-710 Interchange are being replaced with JPCP. The Hobart Yard Bridge, which spans BNSF16 rail tracks and several Metro lanes, is being widened.

The highway has five non-standard lanes (11 ft.) in each direction and is being widened to five standard lanes (12 ft.) with 8-ft. wide shoulders (inside and outside). In addition, the median shoulders are being repaved with JPCP and the median barrier will be upgraded to meet current standards. The work also includes installing new overhead sign structures, an overhead changeable message sign, and upgrades to drainage.

Construction began in May 2018 on the California Department of Transportation's (Caltrans) $150.7 million Interstate 710 Pavement Rehabilitation and Bridge Widening Project, which was awarded to Flatiron Construction Corporation in February 2018. Crews have been making solid progress on the proj...

Owner-Operators Struggle With Strict Rules of AB5

AB5, which went into effect on Jan. 1, 2020, puts strict rules into place regarding the independent contractor status. The status is determined by the ABC Test, which states the following three components:

A: that the worker is free from the control and direction of the hiring entity in connection with the performance of the work, both under the contract for the performance of the work and in fact;

B: that the worker performs work that is outside the usual course of the hiring entity's business; and

C: that the worker is customarily engaged in an independently established trade, occupation, or business of the same nature as the work performed.

When the California Supreme Court signed Assembly Bill 5 (AB5) into law, things began to look grim for California owner-operators working for trucking companies. AB5, which goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2020, puts strict rules into place regarding the independent contractor status. The status is deter...

Vandals' New Digs Will Be 'Game-Changer' for Athletes

After years of planning, the University of Idaho has finally broken ground on a dedicated basketball arena. Scheduled for completion in 2021, the 62,000-sq.-ft. Idaho Central Credit Union Arena will be the new home for Vandals' basketball, regional tournaments, lectures, as well as "small and mid-size" events, other cultural and special events, concerts and conventions, said Guy Esser, project architect of the University. In addition to the court, the new arena also will include a practice gym, lockers and conference facilities and coaches' offices.

Recycled Pavement Find New Home in Highways, County Roads and City Streets

The future of asphalt pavements in America could be decided in the rolling hills of eastern Alabama at the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT). There, on a closed 1.7-mile track, five heavily laden semi-trucks rumble around the road to simulate the stresses placed on today's interstate highways.

The 46 sections of the track bear the load of the trucks, which weigh an average of 155,000 lbs. Embedded sensors record the strains on the track and are used to determine how to best design the pavements that will carry America's traffic for the decades to come.

One of the topics being studied at NCAT is the use of recycled asphalt pavements (RAP) in building roads. Most asphalt pavements in the country must be rehabilitated after years of heavy traffic use, so the top few inches of the road are milled off and replaced with fresh asphalt.

After 18-Month Pause, Dredging Resumes at Port of Savannah

Dredging to deepen the shipping channel to the Port of Savannah has resumed after an 18-month pause, Col. Daniel Hibner of the Army Corps of Engineers recently announced as the second half of the $973 million expansion has started to get under way.

This portion, which is making room for larger cargo ships, involves deepening a 40-mi. (65 km) stretch along the Savannah River and into the Atlantic Ocean.

"This is another element of work as part of the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP) to deepen the harbor to the new authorized depth of 47 feet," said Spencer Davis, senior project manager of SHEP. "This depth will allow the larger, neo-Panamax container vessels to call on the harbor with fewer tidal delays."

Bridge Crews Endure Brutal Winter, High Water

In just a matter of one year when cranes began to loom over the original 35W bridge crossing over the Minnesota River, regular commuters are now seeing real progress on its replacement. Connecting the cities of Bloomington and Burnsville just south of Minneapolis, traffic crews recently switched all six lanes from the old bridge to the new, northbound bridge.

This traffic switch was a major milestone that was met right on schedule in spite of bridge workers enduring one of the more brutal, Minnesota winters and unrelenting high river levels going into late summer this year.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is leading the construction. It is in partnership with Dakota and Hennepin counties and the cities of Burnsville and Bloomington to bring this bridge to the traveling public.

Constructed in 1957, the 62-year-old structure has out lived its capacity while maintenance work and expenses continue to rise. The bridge now carries 114,100 vpd with a projection of 136,700 vpd by 2040.

The Environmental Assessment (EA) report states that "normal, progressive deterioration will require substantial rehabilitation and or replacement of bridge elements within the next five to ten years while the steel girders are likely nearing the end of their design fatigue life."

Winter Doesn't Put Freeze on Flood Repairs

When the unprecedented and historical flooding started in the Missouri and Platte River basins in March 2019, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Omaha District responded immediately. Within hours, the District, led by the Readiness Branch, was developing plans and sending materials out to fight the flood and provide assistance to communities within harm's way.

From aerial and onsite surveillance, it quickly became apparent that the flooding in 2019 was going to be far more significant than anyone had predicted, and in response, the USACE Omaha Systems Restoration Team (OSRT) was stood up.

"The team quickly realized how significant the March ‘Bomb Cyclone' was going to be across the Omaha District's Area of Responsibility. The Omaha Systems Restoration Team was committed to responding as quickly as possible, as we saw how this event was going to impact our friends, neighbors, communities, and even some of the families of District employees," said Bret Budd, chief of the Omaha Systems Restoration Team.

Burke Keeps First Pile Driving Project Straight with RTG Piling Rig

Burke Construction Inc.'s first pile driving project was no easy task. The job at hand for this heavy civil contractor was to install a steel seawall in Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., but this was no straight line of sheet piles in the middle of the beach. Burke's task was to frame the border of Jenkinson's Boardwalk.

Successful completion of the project would require the contractor to take on its first pile driving project and to learn and achieve adequate production with the RTG RG 19 T — one of the most sophisticated piling rigs in the world. Working around the inside and outside corners of the nearby boardwalk would only intensify the learning curve.

Brayman Battles Tight Project Turnaround

Phase I - began Oct. 5 and has been completed. It involved completely removing the bridge deck on the eastbound lanes of I-64 and replacing it with new, steel-reinforced concrete that made use of the bridge's existing beams. To complete this work, eastbound traffic was shifted across the median to the westbound side.

Phase II - began Oct. 24 and includes the same scope of work, replacing the bridge deck on the westbound lanes of I-64. This phase will require westbound traffic to be shifted across the median to the eastbound side.

A major project to replace bridge decks began in early October in Charleston, W. Va. The West Virginia Department of Transportation's (VDOT) Division of Highways is replacing the decks on the I-64 Danner Road overpass bridge, which is between the Oakwood Road (exit 58A) and Montrose Drive (exit....

General information

The first issue of Construction Equipment Guide, which was a four-page listing of classified advertisements, rolled off the presses May 29, 1958. The publication was created and designed to help equipment dealers and manufacturers sell equipment. Prior to its establishment, no other regional publication had addressed this industry need before. Four equipment dealers who advertised in that first issue have never missed an issue since…over 49 years! As the years went on, many more companies followed suit because they came to the same conclusion – advertising in Construction Equipment Guide leads to profit. In a letter to subscribers which appeared in the first issue, Founder and Publisher Edwin M. McKeon described the mission of the newspaper. "The idea is to reach the five-state market of 10,000 prime buyer prospects for used equipment and supplies that you have for sale…We have one and only one purpose— to sell your used equipment." From those humble beginnings in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, with only a handful of loyal and dedicated employees, the paper has grown in size and popularity. After three moves, Construction Equipment Guide is now located on Maryland Dr. in the Ft. Washington,PA, Office Park, and has evolved from a simple listing of equipment to a sophisticated publication with in-depth coverage of industry news, including new equipment applications, major construction projects, personality profiles, and studies into the way current legislation affects real people in the industry. The increased size and scope of the paper has not changed its commitment to its subscribers. Some of the names of the people behind the scenes at Construction Equipment Guide have changed but 49 years and thousands of editions later, the loyalty and dedication of the staff have been consistently strong. Every employee, whether a part of the sales department, editorial, production , circulation or office personnel, understands that he/she is a key player on the team. This family-run paper knows the real meaning of teamwork— at one time or another, all five of McKeon's children have been successfully employed in the business in different capacities. The three boys, Ted, Joseph and Richard joined the firm early on and are currently the publishers of the four regional editions. The girls, Pam and Liz, are temporarily “retired,” raising the grandchildren. The coverage area has expanded from the original five-state area of Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland to include all of New England, West Virginia and Northern Virginia. Circulation has grown from 10,000 to more than 29,000, in what we now call the Northeast Edition. Answering a call from contractors in other areas, Construction Equipment Guide further broadened its coverage area. The Southeast Edition began publication on November 30, 1988, and today has a circulation of more than 29,000 covering Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 1994, Construction Equipment Guide expanded again! It seemed unfair to limit this "bible for construction equipment" to the Eastern U.S., so the best-read paper in the industry is now available in a Midwest Edition. Circulation continues to grow in the newest sister publication, which covers a 13-state region including Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. In 1999, Construction Equipment Guide celebrated Independence Day by growing yet again. The Southwest Edition was launched with coverage in Oklahoma, Western Arkansas, Western Louisiana, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Nevada, and a total circulation of more than 20,000. CEG is more than just Construction Equipment Guide, however. In 1997, CEG Productions was formed to fill a gap in the trade show market. Convinced that contractors wanted to do more than just look at equipment exhibits, CEG Productions created PhilCONX, a more “hands-on” approach to trade shows, with interactive exhibits and demo areas. The first PhilCONX was held in Philadelphia Park in 1998, while PhilCONX 2000 rolled into Pennsauken, NJ. In the future, CEG Productions plans to take PhilCONX on the road. Through all these changes, Construction Equipment Guide has remained true to its original intent. It is still considered “must-reading” for dealers, manufacturers, auctioneers, contractors and equipment users wishing to buy or sell new and used equipment. Today, Construction Equipment Guide is the most quoted journal in the industry. Each issue is filled with market information, equipment sales data, nationally syndicated columnists, fast-breaking news stories, and boasts special issues devoted to showcasing specific types of equipment. Our readership considers the editorial coverage in Construction Equipment Guide to be something they can’t live without. What about you?

Do world leaders (or more precisely pewag #chain manufacturer) with history always act as reliable partners? When considering whether it is worth cooperating with a commercial company people ordinarily rely upon its merits, primarily its successful experience. Do they really do right following such a common way of choosing the partner to share business together? The #Austrian #Pewag company is well-known all over the world as one of the biggest manufacturers and distributors of chains for diverse purposes, as snow chains, #liftingchains, #tireprotectionchains, #conveyorchains, aso. Founded 300 years ago the company has had many representative offices throughout the world by now, one of which was located in Almaty, a large industrial center in the Republic of Kazakhstan. In 2016 keeping on doing business in Kazakhstan the company suddenly ceased complying with its obligations under previously signed agreements. In particular, the company management ceased to pay taxes and rent in a most irresponsible manner. It looked like the company bosses had just lost sight of their representative office in the city of Almaty. Several civil lawsuits were filed against the Pewag company in the Almaty court, Republic of Kazakhstan. The court ruled in favor of the plaintiff and ordered the defendant to re-register the legal entity and pay damages, including taxes and rent for the office space the company had used for its commercial purposes for a long time. It is interesting to note that Company officials did not even consider it necessary to attend the court hearings. However, nothing has changed since then. The #pewag company representatives continue refusing to comply with the courts' decisions. It should be stressed that the above company is considered a world leader with history, not a small company started a couple of years ago of which nobody has ever heard! In summary, sometimes international companies well-known throughout the world only act on the basis of their own interests in complete disregard of the principles and norms of ow world-wide and local laws. This sad fact is a matter of great concern for those who one day decided to cooperate with such partners.
I was curious if anyone liked old equipment that needed restoring. My neighbor across the street from the plant set an old trencher by the road. I did not see a name tag on it. It looks rough but thought I would share. Here are a few pictures. (Mike)
